أُلقُواcast off الحِجَابَthe veil وَأَبْرُزُواand reveal التِّمْثَالاَthe statue
أُلقُوا الحِجَابَ وَأَبْرُزُوا التِّمْثَالاَ
أَتَرُونَdo you see سَعْداًSaad أَمْor تَرُوْنَyou see خَيَالاَa phantom
أَتَرُونَ سَعْداً أَمْ تَرُوْنَ خَيَالاَ
Cast off the veil and reveal the statue.
Cast off the veil and bring forth the statue
Do you see Saad, or do you see a phantom?
Do you see Sa'd or just an apparition?
أَمَّاas for أَنَافَhe towered بِطَيْفِهِin his spectral form بَعْدَafter الرَّدَىdeath
أَمَّا أَنَافَ بِطَيْفِهِ بَعْدَ الرَّدَى
فَكَمَاso, just as أَنَافَhe towered مَدَىthroughout الحَيَاةِlife وَطَالاَand stood tall
فَكَمَا أَنَافَ مَدَى الحَيَاةِ وَطَالاَ
As for his towering in spectral form after death,
With his spirit, after demise he lived on
he likewise towered throughout life and stood tall.
As he endured throughout his life's prolong
أَثْرٌa likeness مِنَof العَيْنِthe original اسْتَعَادَregained حَيَاتَهُits life
أَثْرٌ مِنَ العَيْنِ اسْتَعَادَ حَيَاتَهُ
وَأَعَادَand restored فَضْلَthe bounty of حَيَاتِهَاits life الأَجْيَالاَthe generations
وَأَعَادَ فَضْلَ حَيَاتِهَا الأَجْيَالاَ
A likeness of the original has regained its life,
A trace of the eye its life did regain
and restored the bounty of its life to generations.
And restored the excess of its life for generations
أَنْto تَرْتَعُواyou revel فِيin نِعْمَةِthe blessing of اسْتِقْلاَلِكُمْyour independence
أَنْ تَرْتَعُوا فِي نِعْمَةِ اسْتِقْلاَلِكُمْ
فَتَذَكَّرُواthen remember مَنْwho شَادَbuilt الاسْتِقْلاَلاَindependence
فَتَذَكَّرُوا مَنْ شَادَ الاسْتِقْلاَلاَ
To revel in the blessing of your independence,
To graze in the blessing of your independence
remember, then, who built that independence.
Remember who erected independence
وَتَحَملَتْand bore آلامُهُhis sufferings آمَالَكمْyour hopes
وَتَحَملَتْ آلامُهُ آمَالَكمْ
هَلْquestion marker حَقَّقتْfulfilled آلاَمُهُhis sufferings الآمالاَthe hopes
هَلْ حَقَّقتْ آلاَمُهُ الآمالاَ
And his sufferings bore your hopes.
And whose suffering bore your hopes
Have his sufferings fulfilled those hopes?
Did his suffering realize the hopes?
أَبْدَتْrevealed لَكُمْto you فِيin بَارِزَاتِthe prominent parts of غُضُونِهِhis wrinkles
أَبْدَتْ لَكُمْ فِي بَارِزَاتِ غُضُونِهِ
كَرَباًsorrows تَحَمَّلهَاhe bore them وَكُنَّand they were ثِقَالاَheavy
كَرَباً تَحَمَّلهَا وَكُنَّ ثِقَالاَ
They revealed to you, in his prominent wrinkles,
In the blooms of his youth he showed you
sorrows he bore, and they were heavy.
Sorrows he suffered while you were burdens
تِلْكَthose السُّنونُyears وَمُضْنِياتُand the exhausting burdens of هُمُومِهَاtheir cares
تِلْكَ السُّنونُ وَمُضْنِياتُ هُمُومِهَا
أَلْقَينَthey cast حَوْلَaround المُقْلَتَيْنِthe two eyes ظِلاَلاَshadows
أَلْقَينَ حَوْلَ المُقْلَتَيْنِ ظِلاَلاَ
Those years and their exhausting cares
Those years and the woes of their concerns
cast shadows around his eyes.
