Joy be yours, O cherished luminary!

Your place is above the stations of the stars.

And this gathering of nobles around you

Is like precious pearls in a well-strung necklace.

When you are honored, that honor is due

To those virtues and that learning,

And that justice which protects every free person

And wins the innocent redress from the guilty,

And that kindness you bestow, wherein lies

A balm for the wounds of stricken honor,

And that bounty which makes all costly things seem cheap,

As though pearls came from the clouds' own pearls.

Ah, O master, from whom one seeks

A comely nature in a comely face,

And [at times] he has a teacher's earnestness,

And at others, a boon companion's banter.

May God watch over you, shepherd of souls

With kindness, and guide of minds.

For how much crookedness of character you have set straight

With your sound and upright judgment!

And how much folly you have corrected with wisdom—

Such is the sagacity of the wise shepherd.

And a community rejoiced in a father who tended it

With the care of one just, tenderhearted, and merciful.

A faithful son, through filial devotion, fulfilled for her

    The loving mother's dearest aspirations.

Peace, O leader of every learned cleric

Within it, and perfecter of noble character.

Its company in Egypt has come to you,

To congratulate you on your safe arrival,

And to express, in all sincerity, its feelings

Of reverence for the great master.

So live, be well, and endure through long years,

Blessed in fortune, in abiding honor.
