إِنِّيindeed I لأَذْكُرُsurely remember مُصْطَفَىMustafa وَرَفِيقهُand his companion
فِيin مُسْتَهَلِّهِمَاtheir crescent beginnings وَفِيand in الإِبْدَارِthe full-moon phase
I do indeed remember Mustafa and his companion,
At their first crescent and at their full moon.
مُتَوَخِّياًseeking إِعْتَاقَthe liberation of مِصْرَEgypt كِلاَهُمَاboth of them
وَكِلاَهُمَاand both of them لأَخِيهِto his brother خَيْرُthe best مُبَارِrival
Each seeking to set Egypt free,
And each his brother's worthiest rival.
وَكِلاَهُمَاand both of them يَسْعَىstrives الْغَدَاةَthe morning مُذَلِّلاًsmoothing
سُبُلَthe paths of النَّجاحِsuccess لِمُقْتَفِيfor the follower of الآثَارِthe footsteps
And each strove in the morning, smoothing
The paths of success for those following their footsteps.
وَكَأَنَّand as though مِصْرَEgypt حِيَالَin the face of كُلِّall مَخَاطِرَdangers
إِذْat the time of ذَاكَthat فِيin شُغُلٍpreoccupation عَنِaway from الأَخْطَارِthe dangers
And Egypt seemed, facing every peril,
Then too preoccupied to heed the dangers.
فِيin قَلْبِهَاher heart حُبُّlove of الْحَيَاةِlife طَلِيقَةًfree
لَكِنَّهاbut she تَخْشَىfears أَذَىthe harm of الإِظْهَارِdisclosure
In her heart was love of life in freedom,
Yet she feared the harm of revealing it.
وَضَمِيرُهَاand her conscience آناًa moment فَآناthen another moment يُجْتَلَىis revealed
فَيَرَىand is seen كَمَاas اقْتَدَحَstruck fire from الزِّنَادَthe flint الْوَارِيthe kindler
And her conscience, moment by moment, came to light,
And appeared like fire when the kindler struck the flint.
عَرَفَاthey both knew حَقِيقَتَهَاher true nature وَبَثَّاand both voiced بَثَّهاher grief
ثِقَةًwith confidence وَمَاand not كَانَاwere they both مِنَamong الأَيْسَارِthe gamblers
They both knew her true nature and voiced her grief
With confidence—and neither was a gambler.
لَمْnot يَلْبَثَاthey both remained long مُتَآزِرَيْنِsupporting each other بِنِيَّةٍwith a purpose
مَصْدُوقَةٍsincere فِيin خُفْيَةٍsecrecy وَجِهَارِand openly
They had not long supported one another with a purpose
Sincere, in secrecy and in the open,
حَتَّىuntil إِذَاwhen مَاindeed (emphatic) أَيْقَظَاthey both awakened إِيمانَهَاher faith
وَوَرَتand flared بَوَادِرُfirst signs مِنْof سَنىًradiance وَشَرَارِand sparks
Before, once they had awakened her faith,
And the first glimmers of radiance and sparks had flared,
أَبْدَتْshe revealed أَسَاهَاher sorrow يَوْمَthe day فَارَقَdeparted مُصْطَفىMustafa
هَذَاthis الْجِوَارَabode وَرَامَand sought خَيْرَa better جِوَارِdwelling
She showed her sorrow on the day Mustafa left
This abode and sought a better dwelling.
يَوْمٌa day رَأَىsaw الرَّاؤُوْنَthe witnesses مِنْamong آيَاتِهِits wonders

بِدْعاًan unprecedented marvel يَرِيبُarouses doubt السَّمعُhearing فِيin الإِخْبَارِthe telling
A day when witnesses saw among its wonders
A marvel the ear would doubt when told.
أُخِذَwere seized الأُوْلَىthose who جَهِلُواdid not know البِلاَدَthe land بِرَوْعَةٍwith awe
لِجَلاَلِat the grandeur of ذَاكَthat الْمَشْهَدِspectacle الْكُبَّارِmighty
Those who had not known the land were seized with awe
At the grandeur of that mighty spectacle.
لَمْnot يَحْسَبُواthey supposed فِيin مِصْرَEgypt عَبْداًa slave شَاكِياًlamenting
فَيduring فَتْرَةِa lull of التفكِيرِreflection وَالإِضْمَارِand concealed intent
They had not thought a slave in Egypt lamented
During that lull of reflection and concealed intent.
عَجَباًhow strange! لَهُمْof them مِنْas سَاكِنِيdwellers in دَارٍa house وَمَاyet not
مِنْهُمْamong them بِمَاof what طُوِيَتْwas folded عَلَيْهaround it دَارِone who knows
How strange these dwellers in a house—yet none
Among them knew what it held concealed!
جَزِعُواthey panicked وَأَجْزَعَand how terrified! بِامْرِيءٍfor a man فِيin مَأْمَنٍa safe place

They panicked—and how a man in safety quakes
When a sudden roar springs upon him!
شَعْبٌa people مَشَىmarched وَالْحُزْنُand grief مِلْءُfilling نُفُوسِهِtheir souls
لَكِنَّbut عِليِّينَIlliyyin (the highest heaven) فِيin اسْتِبْشَارِrejoicing
A people marched, grief filling their souls,
Yet Illiyyin, the highest heaven, rejoiced.
لَيْسَis not الَّذِيthe one whom حَمَلُوهُthey carried him وَفيand upon أَعْوَادِهِمْtheir wooden planks
مَيْتاًa dead man يُوَارِيهِhides him التُرَابَthe earth مُوَارِa burier
The one they bore upon their wooden bier was not
A dead man whom a burier would hide in earth.
كَلاَّno indeed! وَلاَnor الخُشُبُthe timbers الَّتِيwhich سَارُواthey marched بِهَاwith them
مَاwhat خَيَّلتْهُimagined it أَعْيُنُthe eyes of النُّظارِthe onlookers
No! Nor were the timbers with which they marched
What the onlookers' eyes imagined them to be.
إِنْnot ذَاكَthat إِلاَّbut العَهْدُthe covenant فِيin تَابُوتهِits ark
عَهْدُthe covenant of القَدِيرِthe Almighty لِشَعْبِهِto His people الْمُخْتَارِchosen
That was nothing but the Covenant within its Ark,
The Almighty's covenant with His chosen people.
رَفَعَتْهُraised it أَعْنَاقُthe necks of العِبَادِthe people وَزَفَّهُand escorted it

The people's necks raised it, and it was led in procession
By David among the soldiers and the rabbis,
مُتَرَقِّصاًdancing وَهْوَwhile he was النَّبيُّthe prophet مُعَالِجاًengaged in

Dancing, prophet though he was, and intent—
King though he was—on blowing the flute.
أَنَّىhow يُقَالُis it called جِنَازَةٌa funeral وَهْيَwhen it is الَّتِيthat which
حَمَلَتْbore لِقَوْمٍto a people آيَةَthe sign of الإِنْشَارِresurrection
How can it be called a funeral, when it
Bore to a people the sign of resurrection?
