لِيI have مَلِيكٌa king أُحِبُّهُI love him
وَهْوَand he بِالكَاشِحِwith the foe افْتَنَنْbecame infatuated

جَدِّيmy fortune العَاثِرُstumbling ابْتَلاhas afflicted
نِيme مِنْهُfrom him بِسُوءِwith an ill ظَنّْopinion

خَالَhe mistook عِيَّfaltering اللِّسَانِof the tongue ضَنّاًfor stinginess
أَعْيَّis faltering اللِّسَانِof the tongue ضَنّْstinginess?
He mistook the tongue's faltering for stinginess;
Is the tongue's faltering stinginess?
فَابْتَغَىso he sought لِيfor me عُقُوبَةًa punishment

So he sought a punishment for me:
A daughter of art, from a son of art.
