Stand by this tomb and mourn a departed man,

Whose loss was grievous in the East.

The foremost of writers in verse and prose,

And the leader of tradition’s guardians and of renewal,

And the peerless exemplar in religion

And worldly life alike, unique in every sense.

Al-Rafi‘i left among his people a name

That was, of all names, most worthy of immortality,

Ever resounding whenever they pleased him:

Time has made the memory of Abd al-Hamid fragrant.
