    We were—as evening drew near—

walking leisurely in the open country,

drunk on the wine of love,

enraptured by the music of the air,

complaining to each other of our cares,

and many were no more than complaints.

Then, as we made our way back at

the muezzin’s call to the night prayer,

    we walked beside a house,

    low-built, its structure frail.

She stopped me, then sprang away,

    leaping as gazelles leap,

until she vanished inside, away from

    me; I waited in displeasure.

And I grew suspicious of the business

she had gone to attend in secret.

So I followed her, shrinking back,

    walking, though modesty restrained me.

Then I saw a mother, plainly bearing

upon her face the traces of weeping.

    And I saw seven children,

    patient, gaunt, and wretched,

their clothes black as deepest night,

    their eye-rims red as blood.

    And Layla among them seemed

an angel pledged to offer comfort.

    She gave, lavishing gifts,

and among her favors was hope.

Then I felt ashamed of my suspicions

    of her, and turned back.

I smiled when she returned, and said,

    “Such is graciousness in giving.”

She denied it, telling a lie, though never

had she uttered a falsehood before.

And sometimes a generous person lies,

and is thereby truer in generosity.

I answered her that I had seen,

and no eye belies a witness.

“Do not deny a kindness that appeared

like dawn, revealed by the light.

The generous one hides his whereabouts,

yet the birds of heaven see him.”

Then we turned and made our way back,

with both our hearts full of serenity,

    entertaining one another with

    whatever sweet conversation we wished.

Then suddenly a tiny sparrow fell

from a balcony, by the hand of fate.

    لَمْ يَبْقَ مِنْهُ سِوَى الذَّمَاءْ

    Naked, small, and trembling,

    it had nothing left but a flicker of life;

thirsty, seeking to slake its thirst,

    hungry, searching for food.

    And how delighted was

Layla with this guest when it came!

She rejoiced in the sweetness of meeting it,

as one parted rejoices in reunion.

And to keep it alive, she exhausted

every resource of one intent on survival.

She tended it like its mother,

and held it in a brotherly embrace.

    Then I praised her kindness

    to the unfortunate and wretched.

She said, “Is playing with a sparrow

    worthy of praise?”

I answered her, “It is a sign

of God within you, beyond dispute.

The generous one hides his whereabouts,

yet the birds of heaven see him.”
