غَدَاbecame اسْمُهُhis name وَهْوَwhile it was فِيin أَيَّامِهَاits days عَلَمُa banner
Ask the legal profession how many a glorious day was his,
when his name became a banner in its annals.
قَدْindeed نَاصَرَhe championed الْعَدْلَjustice فِيهon it فَهْوَso it is مُنْتَصِرٌvictorious
وَهَاجَمَand he assailed الْبَغْيَoppression فِيهon it فَهْوَso it is مُنْهَزِمُdefeated
On such a day he championed justice, and it triumphed;
and assailed oppression, and it was vanquished.
وَأَلْزَمَand he compelled المِدْرَهthe advocate المِنْطِيقَthe eloquent one حُجَّتَهُhis argument
مِنْfrom حَيْثُwhere كَانَhe was بِهَاthrough it لِلحَقُّto the truth يَلْتَزِمُholding fast
And he compelled the eloquent advocate to accept his argument,
for through it he held fast to the truth.
مَاwhat يَبْلُغُcan achieve الْخَصْمُthe adversary مِمَّنْfrom one who قَبْلَbefore مَوْقِفِهِhis appearance
لَدَىbefore القَضَاءِthe court إِلَىto نَجْواهُhis private counsel يَخْتَصِمُhe pleads his case
What can an adversary achieve against one who, before appearing
before the court, pleads his case before his own inner counsel,
حَتَّىuntil إذَاwhen اعْتَزَّhe grew confident بِالبُرْهَانِthrough proof سَلْسَلَهُhe linked it together
طَلْقَfluent اللِّسَانِof tongue عَدَاهُpassed him by الْوَهْمُillusion وَالْوَهْمُand error
until, strengthened by proof, he lays it out link by link,
fluent of tongue, untouched by illusion or error?
بَيَانُهُhis eloquence فِيهِin it كَاليَنْبُوعِlike a spring مُنْفَجِرٌgushing
وَرَأْيُهُand his judgment فِيهِin it كَالْبُنْيَانِlike a building مُدَّعِمُbuttressed
His eloquence gushes there like a spring,
and his judgment stands there like a buttressed building.
