No one worships a god—no, nor a homeland—

Better than by offering a costly sacrifice.

You spoke, and your words were confirmed by your endurance

Of harm that leaves the steel of patience notched.

What is death, if through it the country is saved

From a usurper, and an oppressed people gains redress?

Your bones shatter before you reach your goal,

Yet you endure, and resolve refuses to be broken,

Out of devotion to Egypt, and fear lest she be surrendered

To the enemy by those whose faith is weak.

Martyrdom is for none but those who die for

A just cause, and those who care not what they suffer for it.

Go forth, noble comrades; sufficient recompense for you is

Glory, hard for its suitors to win, should they seek it.

For one who buys his nation’s glory with his youth,

There is remembrance that keeps his name inscribed in gold.

And for her who exchanged her meadow for the grave,

There is a share of honor worth more than a lifetime.

Do not think Egypt will forget you, for each of you

Will remain through the ages, cherished and blessed with mercy.

And in the meadows are breaths from your souls,

Which the winds keep carrying as they gently blow.
