يَاO أَخَاbrother of النُّبْلِnobility وَالنُّهَىand sound judgment وَالمَعَاليand lofty virtues
يَا أَخَا النُّبْلِ وَالنُّهَى وَالمَعَالي
زَادَكَmay He increase you اللهُGod نِعْمَةًblessing وَعَلاَءَand eminence
زَادَكَ اللهُ نِعْمَةً وَعَلاَءَ
O brother of nobility, sound judgment, and lofty virtues,
O brother of nobility, restraint, and sublime virtues
May God increase your blessings and eminence,
May God increase you in bounty and distinction
وَأَدَامَand may He perpetuate الأعْيَادَthe celebrations فِيin بَيْتِكَyour home العَاstart of 'the flourishing'
وَأَدَامَ الأعْيَادَ فِي بَيْتِكَ العَا
مِرِend of 'flourishing' بِالبِرِّwith goodness وَالنَّدَىand generosity مَاas long as شَاءَHe wills
مِرِ بِالبِرِّ وَالنَّدَى مَا شَاءَ
And keep celebrations in your home, abounding
And perpetuate celebrations in your glorious house
in goodness and generosity, as long as He wills.
For as long as you live virtuously and graciously
إِنَّindeed يَوْماًa day فِيهِon which فَتَاتُكَyour girl أَمْسَتْshe became
إِنَّ يَوْماً فِيهِ فَتَاتُكَ أَمْسَتْ
وَهِيَand she is البَدْرُthe full moon بَهْجَةًdelight وَبَهَاءَand splendor
وَهِيَ البَدْرُ بَهْجَةً وَبَهَاءَ
Indeed, a day on which your girl had become
For one day your little one has become
the full moon in delight and splendor—
The full moon, radiant and splendid
تَمُّهits fullness تَمُّهاher fullness وَغِرُّand the radiant ones of لَيَاليهِits nights سstart of 'her years'
تَمُّه تَمُّها وَغِرُّ لَيَاليهِ س
نُوهَاend of 'her years' تَتَابَعَتْfollowed one another غَرَّاءَradiant
نُوهَا تَتَابَعَتْ غَرَّاءَ
its fullness is hers; its radiant nights are
May it be completed, completed and the nights of her beauty whisper
her years, following one another in radiance.
To each other, pure white
عُدُّهَاtheir number أَرْبَعٌfour وَعَشْرand ten وَعُمْرُand the age of الحُـstart of 'the houris'
عُدُّهَا أَرْبَعٌ وَعَشْر وَعُمْرُ الحُـ
ـوْرِend of 'houris' هَذَاthis يُخَلَّدنthey are made immortal فِيِهِin it صَفَاءَpurity
ـوْرِ هَذَا يُخَلَّدن فِيِهِ صَفَاءَ
They number four and ten; and the age of heavenly
Twenty four is her age, and the lifetime of
maidens is this: in it they are made immortal in purity—
Purity will be immortalized in her
لَهْوَit is indeed اليومُthe day أَوْجَبَordained السعدُgood fortune فِيهِon it
لَهْوَ اليومُ أَوْجَبَ السعدُ فِيهِ
أَنْthat تُعَمَّshould encompass المَسْرَّةُjoy الأَصْدِقَاءَthe friends
أَنْ تُعَمَّ المَسْرَّةُ الأَصْدِقَاءَ
is indeed the day on which good fortune ordained
The joy of this day has decreed happiness for all
that joy should embrace the friends.
That joy should encompass all dear friends
فَالْتَقّىso they gathered الأَصْفِياءُthe devoted friends فِيهِon it وَمَاand none
فَالْتَقّى الأَصْفِياءُ فِيهِ وَمَا
مِثْلُكَlike you مِمَّنamong those who يَسْتَكْثِرُgathers many الأَصْفِياءَdevoted friends
مِثْلُكَ مِمَّن يَسْتَكْثِرُ الأَصْفِياءَ
So devoted friends gathered that day, and none
The loyal ones have gathered on it, and none
is like you among those who gather many devoted friends.
Has as many loyal friends as you do
يَشْرَبُونَthey drink الصَّهبَاءَthe tawny wine فَوّارةًfoaming
يَشْرَبُونَ الصَّهبَاءَ فَوّارةً
ثَوَّارَةًsurging بُورِكَتْmay it be blessed لَهُمْfor them صَهْبَاءَtawny wine
ثَوَّارَةً بُورِكَتْ لَهُمْ صَهْبَاءَ
They drink the tawny wine, foaming,
They drink sparkling wine, abundantly
surging—blessed be the tawny wine for them!
Flowing, blessèd wine
يَأْكُلُونَthey eat النُّقولَthe tidbits قَضْماًcrunching وَكَدْماًand biting
يَأْكُلُونَ النُّقولَ قَضْماً وَكَدْماً
وَسَلِيقاًand boiled fare مُعلَّلاًseasoned وَشَواءَand roasted meat
وَسَلِيقاً مُعلَّلاً وَشَواءَ
They eat tidbits, crunching and biting,
They eat fruits and vegetables, bites and morsels
and seasoned boiled fare and roasted meat.
And grilled meat most delicious
يَغْنَمُونَthey enjoy الحَدِيثَconversation أَشْهَىmore delectable مِنَthan الشَّهْدِhoney in the comb
يَغْنَمُونَ الحَدِيثَ أَشْهَى مِنَ الشَّهْدِ
وَأذْكَىand more fragrant مِنَthan السِّلافِthe choicest wine احْتِسَاءَin sipping
وَأذْكَى مِنَ السِّلافِ احْتِسَاءَ
They enjoy conversation, more delectable than honey in the comb,
They find conversation sweeter than honey
and more fragrant to sip than the choicest wine.
And more gratifying than the first sip
يَجِدُونَthey find الأَزْهَارَthe flowers بَاهِرَةَdazzling الأَبْصَارِthe eyes
يَجِدُونَ الأَزْهَارَ بَاهِرَةَ الأَبْصَارِ
نَبْتاًas growing plants وَأَوْجُهَاًand faces حَسْنَاءَbeautiful
نَبْتاً وَأَوْجُهَاً حَسْنَاءَ
They find flowers dazzling to the eyes,
They find the flowers most pleasing to behold
as growing plants and as beautiful faces.
Growth and beauty
شَهِدُواthey witnessed لِلذَّكَاءِfor intelligence وَالطُّهرِand purity عِيداًa festival
شَهِدُوا لِلذَّكَاءِ وَالطُّهرِ عِيداً
رَأَوْاthey saw النُبْلَnobility عِفَّةchastity وَذَكَاءَand intelligence
رَأَوْا النُبْلَ عِفَّة وَذَكَاءَ
They witnessed a festival of intelligence and purity;
They witnessed a feast of intelligence and purity
they saw nobility in chastity and intelligence.
They saw nobility, chastity and brilliance
نَظَرُواthey looked فِيin فَريدَةَFarida مُجْتَلَىa manifestation of عَلْوَloftiness
نَظَرُوا فِي فَريدَةَ مُجْتَلَى عَلْوَ
إذاwhen الرُّوحُthe spirit فيin التُّرابِthe dust تَرَاءَىrevealed itself
إذا الرُّوحُ في التُّرابِ تَرَاءَى
They beheld in Farida a vision of loftiness,
They looked upon the unique elevated grace
when the spirit revealed itself in dust.
When the soul seemed manifest in the dust
صَدَقَتْshe bore out مَاwhat عَنَىmeant اسْمُهَاher name وَقَلِيلٌand few
صَدَقَتْ مَا عَنَى اسْمُهَا وَقَلِيلٌ
فِيin القَوَافِيthe rhymes مَنْthose who صَدَّقَbore out الأَسْمَاءَthe names
فِي القَوَافِي مَنْ صَدَّقَ الأَسْمَاءَ
She fulfilled what her name meant; and few
Her name has proven true, and few
are those in verse who prove their names true.
Names in verse have proven so truthful
