With your death, they felt safe from the lion's onslaught.

What did they fear from the statue's enchantment?

They kept it from eyes that yearned for it,

overflowing with grief, their tears precious.

Until Egypt willed something other than their will,

and one of her most faithful sons unveiled it.

Do you labor to prepare your people's independence,

and are driven from them on Independence Day?

You have received some justice—rather, this is repentance

at its beginning; every beginning has a sequel.

For indeed you return, while another's fortune falters

in what he arrogantly claimed, while your fortune stands high.

How fair your return, with Kinana free,

welcoming you with honor and reverence.

Does the throng celebrating you fill you with awe,

of illustrious youths and lordly men?

What fresh life have you breathed

into these lions and lion cubs?

A revival for your cherished homeland was your hope,

while others deemed it an impossible hope.

You risked your youth for it, though spending it

was extravagance for a goal so hard to attain.

O Mustafa, years have passed, yet still unassuaged

is my longing for you; so very long they are.

My survival is a wonder, after the noblest companions

have passed away, though fate has not willed my passing.

    وأَحَقُّ حيٍ بِالأَسى أَمْثَالِي

    They are the world's finest, and were its finest;

and among the living, those like me most deserve to grieve.

Deep-reaching sorrow is in my heart; and if

a lament is due, it is I who should be mourned.

What can I say, when here are their names

and their forms, filling time before me,

revisiting me in my hearing or my sight,

now at my right, now at my left.

I indeed keep their covenant and safeguard it

through every event, and never slacken.

And it is as if my feeling were theirs, rejoicing in what

the homeland pays of their due, and continues to pay.

How much fruit I have found in their plantings,

renewed as circumstances succeed one another.

A solace their great deeds have afforded, and indeed

through it, parting may become like reunion.

Thus the glory of genius and sacrifice

does not end when circumstances change.

O Mustafa, you were nothing less than perfect,

if any man could be described as perfect.

What did you find in youth and its pleasures

but hardships and terrors within it?

Indeed, I witnessed with my own two eyes what

you suffered in the mornings and the evenings.

Volunteering, you freely gave what exhausts one's strength:

the toil of days and sleeplessness of nights.

When you undertook the mighty task, and there was none

for a time—there was no helper or ally.

Scruples stood in the way of hope's enticement

for a time—there was no helper or ally.

The people were thirsty, and your promise enticing,

yet they saw in it the shimmer of a mirage.

You strive, while their despair obstructs the path

at every halt of yours or journey.

So you keep traversing its reaches, and do not

give any thought to the warnings of failure.

On the way to what you seek, you have a resolute man's drive,

who never bends, and the valor of one undaunted. [Unclear final word.]

Until, when certainty became clear and there came confirmation

of your claim through a sign from your exalted Lord,

you lay in death, at your most triumphant over the foes

of Egypt, through the outcome of your death-dealing illness.

earthquake's tremor was stronger than it.

a family that had lost its dearest kin.

that life is aspirations and noble pursuits.

through which no lifespan is prolonged.

united, to let that state endure.

And they sprang forward with a steadfast resolve

    free of rancor and fear.

on its day by the good done on a day gone by.

    dyed with youth's precious blood.

she endured in fetters and afflictions—

all the glory and prosperity he desires.
