I journeyed from my own time, turning back

through the centuries to what lay beyond.

And my purpose was only this: I stood

before relics of art that destruction had spared.

    Temples raised for immortality

by the genius of powerful giants.

So my body remains in its own era,

while my heart is far away at time's beginning.

    يُغَالِبُ فِيهَا السُّرُورَ البُكَاءْ

    I let my gaze roam over those relics;

within it, weeping wrestled with joy.

So nothing held my gaze captive save a statue,

ancient in beauty, fresh in appearance.

A statue of Isis, in whose hard stone

life is felt and blood flows.

The softness of its flank astonishes you,

and water from the face's radiance quenches your thirst.

    فَيَا عَجَباً لِلرِّمَالِ الظِّماءْ

    In it, beauty gushed forth from a spring;

how strange, then, the thirsty sands!

The enchantment of coquetry and the restraint of majesty,

and life's command and modesty's prohibition.

Then I understood how she had captivated her worshippers

with the magic of beauty and the secret of intelligence,

and the eyes' outpouring of reason's light,

which lays bare the secrets of every beholder.

    Countless ages have indeed passed,

with bliss and misery alternating through them.

    Lands vanish and mortals perish,

    while Isis shines without vainglory.

When time assails her, it adds nothing to her

but luster, once the wave has receded.

    I lingered, pondering her nature,

circling her, enraptured in the open wilderness.

Then, when the forenoon's heat wore me down

and weariness overtook me in my circling,

I sought refuge in the ample part of her shade,

and in her shade were relief and healing for me.

Thought carries me through every realm

when excessive weariness lays the body low.

    Then, suddenly, that goddess,

    possessed of majesty and grandeur,

    her flank stirring, came forward,

    swaying between radiance and splendor,

and gazed at me with eyes whose

    sockets overflowed with light—

with those eyes, before which, unceasingly,

even defiance bows to their might.

So among kings there are only bondsmen,

and among queens there are only bondwomen.

And she said, with that Kawthar-like mouth,

which the stars of heaven had studded:

O seeker of beauty in every art

sound in meaning and solid in structure,

indeed, you have come from inhabited lands

on a pilgrimage to beauty in this wilderness.

So do not be dismayed by the lack of a companion

save remembrance, which fills this emptiness.

And forms are surely a state that changes,

while beauty, apart from forms, endures.

It has forms that are forever renewed,

and its essence is forever pure.

In every age and every place,

it is varied in form for the devout.

For the ancient and the new are nothing

but equal before the power of God.

I have lifted for you the hanging veils,

and cleared obscurity from your eyes.

Turn your thought toward a land with which we

share a bond of ancient brotherhood:

the land of al-Sham, which has always been

the land of geniuses and prophets.

For on Lebanon's slope there is a heavenly maiden,

whose creator displayed his artistry as he wished.

When she emerges from the tent of chastity,

as Dhuka, the sun, shines forth in the morning,

you will recognize her as an image of me,

    restored to creation after obliteration.

Then you will know her; in her are my two adornments:

the magic of beauty and the secret of intelligence.
