The patriarch of illustrious, noble men has gone
The pillar of the glories of honorable men has gone
into God's keeping, and he will never return.
To the custody of Allah, never to return

He was pious, patient, and charitable,
He was devout, patient, doing good
chaste in character, pure in inclination.
He forgave mistakes, pure of purpose

Whoever enumerated commendable virtues
Whoever listed his agreeable traits
enumerated them all in describing him.
Would list them all to describe him
بَلَّغَهُaccorded him المَصْدُوقَwhat was truly fulfilled مِنْof حَقِّهِhis due
شَعْبٌa people عَلَىupon إِكْرَامِهِhonoring him أَجْمَعَاunanimously agreed
He was accorded what was truly his due
The truthful gave him what he deserved
by a people united in honoring him.
A people who altogether honored him
وَقَلَّand rare was مَنْone who أَكْرَمَhonored مِنْfrom قَبْلِهِbefore him
حَيّاًa living person كَمَاas إِكْرَامِthe honoring إِذْwhen شُيِّعاhe was borne to burial
And few before him had honored
Few honored him more while he lived
a living man as he was honored when borne to burial.
As the honor when he was bid farewell
كَانhe was أَباًa father بِرّاًdevoted وَأَصْلاًand a root ذَكاflourished
فَرْعٌa branch لِلْعَلْيَاءِtoward the heights مَنْwhoever فُرِّعَاwas brought forth
He was a devoted father and a flourishing root;
He was a righteous, pure father
whoever sprang from him was a branch reaching for the heights.
A branch for the most eminent family tree
نَجْلاَهُhis two sons بِالآدَابِin letters وَالعِلْمِand learning لمْdid not

يَتَّخذَاboth choose دُونَbelow الذرَىthe summits مَوْضِعَاa station
His two sons, in letters and learning, never
His two sons in morals and knowledge
chose a station beneath the summits.
Did not take other than the highest position
وَكَانَand he was أَوْفىmost faithful مَنْone who بِهِthrough him أُسْعِدَتshe was made happy
زَوْجٌa wife رَعَتْshe kept مِنْof عَهْدِهِhis covenant مَاwhat رَعَىhe kept
And he was the most faithful of men to gladden
And he was the most faithful with whom
a wife who kept his covenant as he kept it.
A wife was blessed with all he provided
لَمْdid not يُرْضِهَاsatisfy her العَيْشُlife إِذَاwhen مَاfor emphasis نأَىhe departed

فَأَزْمَعَتْso she resolved نَأْياًto depart وَقَدْand already أَزْمَعَاhe had resolved
Life did not content her once he was gone,
She was not pleased with life without him
so she resolved to depart, as he had resolved.
So she hastened when he hastened too
وَاسْتَقْبَلتْand she welcomed فِرْدَوْسُFirdaws فُرْدَوْسَهَاher paradise

And Firdaws welcomed her paradise,
And Paradise welcomed its Paradise
answering her caller when he called.
Answering its caller when he called
نِعْمَexcellent are الْقرِينَانِthe two spouses فَقَدْfor indeed مُثِّلاboth were portrayed
فِيin الْبِرِّgoodness ذَاكَthat المَثَلَexample الأَبْدَعَاmost wondrous
What fine spouses! For they were indeed held up
What blessed companions they were
as that most wondrous example of goodness.
The ideal example of righteousness
عَاشَاthey both lived كَمَاas شَاءَwilled التَّوَاخِيmutual fellowship مَعاًtogether
وَحِينَand when حَمَّwas decreed الْبَيْنَseparation مَاتَاthey both died مَعَاtogether
They lived together as companionship willed,
They lived as intimacy desired together
and when separation was decreed, they died together.
And when parting arrived, they died together
لَوْif وَعِظَwere admonished النَّاسُthe people لمَاwould not خُوطِبُواthey were addressed
بِحَادِثٍby an event أَشْجَىmore sorrowful وَلاَnor أَرْوَعاmore awe-inspiring
Were people to be admonished, they could not be addressed
If people were to be admonished they would not
by an event more sorrowful or more awe-inspiring.
Hear of a sadder or more wondrous event
