وَجَدَّدْتَand you renewed لِلإِسْلاَمْfor Islam مُعْجِزَthe miracle of أَحْمَدَاAhmad
You have secured for this age an undying remembrance,
and renewed for Islam the miracle of Ahmad.
وَبِتَّand you became لِمِصْرٍfor Egypt بِالمَفَاخِرِin glorious deeds مَحْتِداًa wellspring
وَمِنْand from قَبْلُbefore كَانتْshe was لِلمَفاخِرِfor glories مَعتداa storehouse
And you have become a wellspring of glories for Egypt,
and previously she had been a storehouse of glories.

A pitch-black night of ignorance has encircled her,
and ears within her have grown deaf to the call of guidance.
فَإِنْso if قَلبَturns المَحْزُونthe sorrowful one فِيacross الأُفْقِthe horizon طَرْفَهُhis gaze
فَلَيْسَthen he does not يَرَىsee إِلاَّexcept ذَكَاءَكَyour brilliance فَرْقَدَاa northern star
So if the sorrowful one turns his gaze across the horizon,
he sees nothing but your brilliance, a northern star.
وَمَنْand whoever تَدْعُهُyou call him يِرْدُدْechoes نِدَاءَكَyour call لاَdoes not يُجِبْanswer
كَمَاjust as رَجَّعالصَّخرُthe rock echoed back الأَصَمdeaf لَكَto you الصَّدَىthe echo
And whoever you call echoes your call but does not answer,
just as deaf rock returns the echo to you.
لَكَfor you اللهُGod مِنْas شَاكٍa complainant عَنِon behalf of النَّاسِthe people دَهْرَهُمْtheir age

God bless you, a man who complains of their age on the people's behalf,
while they have not complained, though it has oppressed and transgressed;
وَمِنْand as سَاهِرٍone keeping vigil يُفْنِيconsumes مَنَارَthe beacon of حَيَاتِهِhis life

and one keeping vigil, burning up the beacon of his life
as light, to guide the heedless and the sleeping;
وَمِنْand as نَاظِمٍone who strings لِلمُلْكِfor kingship تاَجَa crown of فَرَائِدٍrare jewels

and a poet who strings for kingship a crown of rare gems
of praise, for which the crowns of kings are ransom;
وَمِنْand as مُنشِدٍa reciter يُحْيِيrevives فَخَارَthe glory of جُدُودِهِhis forefathers

and a reciter who revives his forefathers' glory,
thus granting them renewed glory through that.
إِذَاif النَّسلُposterity لمْdoes not يَحْفِلْcare بِذِكْرِabout the memory of جُدُودِهِits forefathers
فَإِنَّthen indeed لَهُمْfor them مَوْتاًa death بِهِthrough it مُتَعَدَّدَاrepeated
If posterity cares nothing for its forefathers' memory,
then through that their deaths are multiplied.

Rhymes whose beautiful arrangement adorns poetry,
as a cup is adorned with bubbles neatly arrayed.

And craftsmanship that turns words into measured melody,
and reveals hidden meaning to us in embodied form.

Is it magic you show us, or pages where, whenever
we turn them page by page, we see a marvel appear?

suddenly they are pale camels hastening through the deserts,
traveling without motion, chanting without a chant.

Suddenly they are war, whose army casts off deserts
as sandals, whenever they spring to pounce upon the foe.

Your eloquence is a gleaming sword for truth:
by it the oppressor is humbled; by it death is slain.

Through your poetry, let him live whose merit was great,
and who died deserving of everlasting glory.

And let the learned choose your book as a companion,
noble, and as a wise teacher and guide.
