وَأَنْand that تَسْمَعُواyou hear إِنْشَادَهُhis recitation الشُّعْرَpoetry فِيat آنِthe same time
How fortunate you are to hear Hafiz's poetry,
Congratulations that you hear the poetry of Hafiz
And to hear him recite poetry at the same time.
And that you hear his recitation of poetry in one moment
هُمَاthey both تُحْفَتَاtwo treasures of دَهْرٍan age ضَنِينٍgrudging ظَفِرْتُمَاyou both won
بِكِلْتَيْهِمَاwith both of them مِنْfrom مُسْعِفٍan obliging giver غَيْرِnot ضَنَّانِstingy
They are two treasures of a grudging age; you both have won
They are two gifts of an epoch of longing that you have attained
Both from an obliging giver who is no miser.
With both from a benefactor who is not resentful
أُحِسُّI sense اخْتِلاجاًa flutter لِلْمُنَىof wishes فِيin صُدُورِكُمْyour breasts
وَأَلْمَحُand I glimpse لِلآَمَالِfor hopes إِرْهَافَa sharpening آذَانِears
I sense wishes fluttering in your breasts,
I feel a turmoil for wishes in your hearts
And see ears pricked up in hope.
And I glimpse hopes with listening ears
يَثُورُrises بِهَاin them الشَّوْقُlonging إِلَىtoward شَدْوِthe song of حَافِظٍHafiz
فَكَيْفَso how أَلَهِّيهَاI distract them بِتَرْتِيلِwith the chanting of مُطْرَانِMutran
Longing rises in them for Hafiz's song;
Through it yearning for the chant of Hafiz wells up
So how can I distract them with Mutran's chanting?
So how can I distract it with the warbling of turtledoves?
وَهَلْand am أَنَاI إِلاَّexcept صَاحِبٌa friend وَمُرَافِقٌand a companion

لِضَيْفٍto a guest جَلِيلٍillustrious أَيْنَwhere is مِنْcompared with شَأْنِهِhis stature شَانِيmy stature
And am I anything but a friend and companion
For am I not a companion and friend
To an illustrious guest—what is my stature beside his?
To an eminent guest - how can my status equal his?
أُعَرِّفُI introduce نَفْسِيmyself إِذْas أُعَرِّفُكُمْI acquaint you بِهِwith him

I introduce myself when I introduce you to him
And your knowledge of him exceeds my account.
While you have knowledge of him beyond my explanation

He imparted to this country and its people
Favors that thanks and gratitude cannot repay.
Graces that are not fully thanked or appreciated

And adorned you with enduring praises
With necklaces of matchless pearls and pure gold,
With necklaces of rare pearls and agates

And of beauties who, in every place
And songs that did not dress any place
They dwell, are nothing but a garden's blossoms.
Except with the blossoms of gardens

A prayer in which their share is equal to yours;
A prayer for them of a share like what is for you
It is bond enough that the afflicted are alike.
It suffices as common ground that the afflicted are equal

May God shepherd one day in Damascus our majesty
Heralds of a dawn of reform and prosperity,
With tidings of a dawn of righteousness and prosperity

Firm in its foundations, strong in its pillars,
With a firm foundation and pillars

And flourishing such that Syria boasts that they
Her sons, when lands boast of their young men.
Are its builders when countries shine with youth

Do you not see the future as a laughing sea
Through them, revealing faces radiant as lamps?
With faces like lamps, red with joy because of them
