Ask justice: it will tell what its master was—

its tireless investigator and clear-sighted, astute sage.

That man to whom, before its keys were entrusted

to him, people already appealed for judgment.

Vigilant—no falsehood can rise to him, nor

can proffered doubts and accusations lead him astray.

He decides the matter, concerned with nothing in it but

what God's covenants and pledges approve.

And he delivers judgment where it strikes most decisively

for what is right, while injustice's edge is notched.

Guarding, as best he can, against error or folly

in matters of life, or of a right that is infringed.

Shall souls from their Creator's spirit perish

by force, as breezes vanish when they pass?

And may rights be violated, when in conscience they leave

a painful sting if the judge does not safeguard them?
