وَيَاand O سَنَةًa year لَقِينَاهاwe welcomed it
بِمِلْءwith the fullness of صُدُورِناour breasts بِشْرَاjoy
And O year we have welcomed
Oh year we met
With our breasts full of joy,
With our hearts filled with joy
أَزِيلِيremove آيَةَthe sign of الْبُؤْسَىmisery
وَهَاتِيand bring آيَةَthe sign of البُشْرَىglad tidings
Remove the sign of misery,
Remove the mark of misery
And bring the sign of glad tidings.
And bring the mark of glad tidings
إِلَيْكِto you بِمَاwith what أَلَمَّbefell بِنَاupon us
وَأَجْرَىand made flow الأَدْمُعَthe tears الحُمْرَاred
Take away what has afflicted us
To you with what has afflicted us
And made the red tears flow,
And the red tears that flowed
لِتصْفُوِso that they may clear بَعْدَafter كدْرَتِهَاtheir murkiness
دُمُوعُtears المُقْلَةِthe eye الشَّكْرَىgrateful
So that, after their murkiness, they may clear—
That after its turbidity they become pure
The tears of the grateful eye,
The tears of grateful submission
كصَفْوِlike the serenity of النَّفْسِthe soul بَعْدَafter الخطْبِcalamity
أَعْقَبَleft behind حُزْنُهَاits sorrow الذِّكْرىremembrance
Like the soul's serenity after calamity,
Like the purity of soul after adversity
Its sorrow having left remembrance behind.
Followed by its sorrowful memories
أُعِيديrestore السُّبْلَthe paths سَاقِيَةًa watercourse
تفِيضُpours forth الخَيْرَbounty وَالبِرَّاand benevolence
Make the paths a watercourse once more,
Restore the paths pouring
Pouring forth bounty and benevolence.
Goodness and righteousness
نَحِنwe yearn حَنِينَthe yearning of وَالِدَةٍa mother
إِذَاwhen مَاever (emphasis) أَرْضَعَتْshe suckled قَطْرَاrain
We yearn with a mother's yearning
We are yearning like a mother
When she has suckled rain,
When she suckles a drop
وَتَلْبَثُand remains كلُّevery بَاسِقَةٍtowering tree
بِفيْيءِin the shelter of ظِلهَاits shade قَصْرَاa palace
And every towering tree remains
And every tall tree lasts
A palace in the shelter of its shade.
In the shade of its palace
عَلَىon هَذَاthis الرجَاءِhope حَلاَwas sweet
لَنَاfor us توْدِيعُbidding farewell to مَاwhat مَرَّاpassed
With this hope, it was sweet
On this hope passed
For us to bid farewell to what had passed.
Our farewell to what has passed
وَسَلَّمْناand we greeted عَلَىupon الآتِيwhat is coming
بِمَاwith what يَسْتَأْسِرُtakes captive الحُرَّاthe free man
And we greeted what was to come
And we bid peace to what is coming
With what takes the free man captive.
That captures the freeman
أَقَمْنَاwe held مِهْرَجَانَa festival دُجىًnight-darkness
يُحَالِفُis allied with ذِكْرُهُits memory الدَّهْرَاeternity
We held a festival by night,
We held a festival of darkness
Whose memory is allied with eternity,
Whose memory befriends eternity
لِنَلْقَىso we may meet عَامَنَاour year سَمْحاًgenerous
To meet our year, generous,
To meet our year with tolerance
Cheerful of face and smiling.
Easy, gleeful tidings
جَلَوْنَاwe made shine لَيْلَةa night حُسْنَاbeauty
بِنُورِwith the light of الزِّينَةِadornment الكُبْرَىgrand
We made a night shine with beauty,
We adorned a beautiful night
With the light of grand adornment.
With the light of grand decoration
وَردْنَاwe drank of صَفْوَهُits purity صَفْواًin purity
وَزَدْناand we added زهْرَهُits blossoms زَهْرَاblossoms
We drank of its purity in purity,
We returned its clarity as clarity
And added blossoms to its blossoms.
And added to its flowers more flowers
وَأَرْقَصْنَاand we made dance الغصُونَthe branches لَهُfor it
وَأَنْشدْنَاand we recited لَهُfor it الشِّعْرَاpoetry
And made the branches dance for it,
And we made the branches dance for it
And recited poetry for it,
And we sang poems to it
لَعَلَّperhaps مَسَرَّةًa joy مِنْهُfrom it
تُعِيضُcompensates مِنَfor الَّذِيwhat ضَرَّاcaused harm
Perhaps a joy from it
That maybe some joy from it
Will make amends for what brought harm.
Would compensate what misery has done
إِذاif مَاever (emphasis) سَاءَتِdid ill الأُولَىthe former
عَسَىmay أَنْthat تُحْسنَdo good الأُخْرَىthe latter
If ever the former year did ill,
If the former were miserable
May the latter do good.
Perhaps the latter would be good
