أَمُشَيِّعbidding farewell? أَنَاI كُلَّevery يَوْمٍday ذَاهِباًone departing
وَمُشَيِّعand sending off فيin الإِثْرِthe wake قَلْباًa heart ذَائِباmelting
Am I each day to bid farewell to one departing,
I bid farewell each day as I depart
and send a melting heart in his wake?
And bid farewell with a melting heart
يَاO صَاحِبِيmy friend أَخْلَفْتَyou left unfulfilled لِيfor me أُمْنِيَّةًa wish
كَانَتْit was دُعَائيmy prayer لاmay ... not عَدِمْتُكَI lose you صَاحِباas a companion
O my friend, you left a wish of mine unfulfilled,
O my companion, you left behind a wish
which was my prayer: 'May I never lose you as a companion.'
That in my prayers for you would never diminish
أَقْوَتْbecame deserted مَعَاهِدُنَاour familiar haunts وَكَانَتْand they were بِالهَوَىwith love
مَعْمُورَةًfilled فَإِخَالُهُنَّso I imagine them خَرَائِبَاruins
Our familiar haunts lie deserted; once, with love, they were
Our covenants grew strong with affection
filled, so I imagine them as ruins.
Prosperous - yet now left in ruin and dejection
وَأَرَىand I see وُجُوهَthe faces الشَّاهِدِينَthose present كَأَنَّهاas though they
تَتَفَقَّدُare searching for الوَجْهَthe face المُنِيرَradiant الغَائِبَاabsent
And I see the faces of those present, as though they
I see the faces of friends as if they try
are searching for the radiant face now absent.
To find your shining face that's gone awry
كُنْتَyou were الأَخَthe brother المَحْبُوبَbeloved وَالإِلْفَand the close companion الَّذِيwho
لَمْdid not يَنْسَforget مُفْتَرِضاًa prescribed obligation وَيُهْمِلَand neglect وَاجِبَاa duty
You were the beloved brother and the close companion who
You were the beloved brother and cherished friend
never forgot an obligation or neglected a duty.
Who did not forget a duty or break a bond to rend
إنْif كَانَthere is فِيin عَيْشِيmy life وَقَدْand already فَارَقْتَهُyou have left it
طِيبٌsweetness فَلَيْسَyet is not العَيْشَlife بَعْدَكَafter you طَائِبَاsweet
If in my life, now that you have left it, there is
If there was goodness in the life from which you fled
any sweetness, life is not sweet after you.
There is no goodness left in life now you are dead
إِنَّindeed الَّذِيthe one whom كَابَدْتَyou struggled فِيهِfor his sake مُحَاذِراًwatchful
وَمُصَابِراًand steadfast لَمْno longer يَبْقَremains فيهِin it رَاغِبَاdesiring
Indeed, the one for whom you struggled, watchful
What you endured with patience and precaution
and steadfast, no longer has any desire for life.
Remains no longer worth the yearning and temptation
تَوْفِيقُTawfiq (success) أَخْطَأَكَhas eluded you الَّذِيwhich تُدْعَىyou are called بِهِby it
وَالمَوْتُand death لاَnot يَرْعَىheeds لِحَيٍّfor a living person جَانِبَاstanding
Tawfiq—success, the name you bear—has eluded you;
Success misguided you, as you were oft implored
and death has no regard for anyone living.
And death spares not the living as they are ignored

Where is the sweet speech that hopes are given to drink,
Where is that sweet talk with which we were regaled
like honey, however their tastes may differ?
Like honey, no matter how different the sips we inhaled?

Where are those gentle tales, each filled
life stories filled with curiosities and wonders?
With wonders and marvels newly distilled?

Where is he, beautiful in character and form,
Where is the polite one, in manners and nature
pure in disposition, unsullied in his aims?
The purest morals, untainted in nurture

No positions pursued, no ranks to make

He is wronged, yet you never see him resentful,
If wronged, no vengeance would he demand
or provoked, yet you never see him angry.
If provoked, no anger from him would you withstand

And he smiles on—it is not his face,
Ever smiling - not just his face, but his heart
but his heart; others smile falsely.
While the rest of him plays an untruthful part

ages have polished until he was perfect in virtue.
Perfected by time and well-honed common sense

O Hasib, if you are robbed of your brother, I too
Can I be blamed for doubting if they steal you away?
complain, as you do, of plundering Time.
I doubt time's thievery as much as you today
قَدْindeed كُنْتَyou were أُسْتَاذِيmy teacher فَهَلْso can ...? أَنَاI وَاجِدٌfinding

You were my mentor, yet can I profess
a word to steady your throbbing heart?
Words to steady the heart with rightfulness?

It's comfort enough that you left this world full of woe
been filled with sorrow, tragedies, and calamities.
Replete with sorrows, grief and fatal blows
فَليَلْقَso may he find عِنْدَwith إِلهِهِhis God مَاwhat لَمْnot يَكُنْbe

So may he find with his God what could not
So may you find with your Maker what you never could gain
be attained here: hopes and desires.
Of bliss and fortune you sought here in vain
