Alas for me, beset by the vicissitudes of my time!

Wherever it shot its arrows, there I stood.

Indeed I ask, while my companions have departed:

Will night and day prolong my torment, do you think?

Who will bring solace to one whose heart is wounded,

when all paths to solace have been barred to him?

News of your death, O Abd al-Aziz, pierced me

and added sorrows to my sorrows.

    هَلْ حُرْقَةٌ كَالنَّأْيِ قَبْلَ أَوَانِ

    You surprised me with separation before its time;

is any burning grief like untimely separation?

Do you grieve friends whose hearts you won

through wit, when you were your friends' delight?

your wondrous precedence left my own speech helpless.

that speech is music on triple and double strings.

You surpassed those from whom you learned in youth,

and outstripped the most eminent of your peers.

in the radiance of proof by a pretender's claim?

    two ornaments, different yet harmonious.

Who will give us the witticisms from which minds gather

whatever they desire of the choicest gathered fruits?

before reflection even by the readiest minds?

Who will give us humor that has joined to

old men's forbearance the frivolity of youths?

    was lightning's flash, not a spearpoint's shattering.

A draught the hearts shared, soothing

their thirsts, while the hearts' wishes were fulfilled.

two men of that same mold?

A man of scant shadow, lean of belly,

walking with his two shoulders uneven.

his eyes betrayed his hidden ailment.

His features were endowed with a touch of brown,

a hue from Mina, if you will, or Adnan.

    unkempt, its wildness never tamed,

signs of such intellect and such a heart!

not in its ornaments or its structure.

at differences of opinion and religion.

beyond all desires is the artist's goal.

Whatever he practices, dignity, to him,

lies in doing it well and in mastery.

And take comfort, O his family: surely he whom

you mourn is in bliss and gardens.

And take comfort, O admirers of his excellence,

in lands both near and far.
