رَأَيْتُهُI saw him وَرَآنِيand he saw me
فَأُوْلِعَso were smitten القَلْبَانِthe two hearts
I saw him, and he saw me.
So both hearts were smitten.
كَأَنَّas though سِحْرٌa spell عَرَاهُcame over him
كَأَنَّas though سِحْراًa spell عَرَانِيcame over me
As though a spell had come over him,
As though a spell had come over me.
أَجَابَanswered لَحْظِيmy glance لَمَّاwhen
بِاللَّحْظِwith a glance مِنْهُfrom him دعَانِيhe called me
My glance answered when
He called me with a glance of his.
وَكَادَand nearly يَكْبُوstumble فُؤَادِيmy heart
مِنْfrom شِدَّةِthe intensity of الخَفَقَانِthe throbbing
And my heart nearly stumbled
From the intensity of its throbbing.
وَذُقْتُand I tasted مَاwhat لَمْdid not أَذُقْهُI taste it
مِنْof لَذَّةِthe delight of النِّيرَانِthe flames
And I tasted what I had never tasted before
Of the delight of flames.
