إِذَاif فَاقَsurpasses سَادَاتِlords الحِمَىthe land آلَthe house of سُرْسُقٍSursock
إِذَا فَاقَ سَادَاتِ الحِمَى آلَ سُرْسُقٍ
فَإِنَّthen indeed نَجِيباًNajib فِيهِمُamong them السَّيِّدُthe lord الْجَعْدُnoble
فَإِنَّ نَجِيباً فِيهِمُ السَّيِّدُ الْجَعْدُ
If the house of Sursock surpasses the lords of the land,
Then Najib, among them, is the noble lord.
سَرِيٌّa nobleman يَرَىfavors الإِقْدَامَboldness فيin كُلِّevery خِطَّةٍundertaking
سَرِيٌّ يَرَى الإِقْدَامَ في كُلِّ خِطَّةٍ
وَخِطَّتُهُand his course فِيin كُلِّevery حَالٍcircumstance هِيَit is الْقَصْدُmoderation
وَخِطَّتُهُ فِي كُلِّ حَالٍ هِيَ الْقَصْدُ
A nobleman who favors boldness in every undertaking,
And his course in every circumstance is moderation.
تَرَاهُyou see him بِلاَwithout ظِلٍّa shadow نُحُولاًfrom thinness وَجَاهُهand his prestige
تَرَاهُ بِلاَ ظِلٍّ نُحُولاً وَجَاهُه
عَرِيضٌbroad لَهُit has ظلٌّa shadow عَلَىover الشَّرْقthe East مُمْتدُstretching
عَرِيضٌ لَهُ ظلٌّ عَلَى الشَّرْق مُمْتدُ
You see him shadowless from thinness, yet his prestige
Is broad, with a shadow stretching over the East.
مُحبُّوهُhis admirers فيin نُعْمَىbliss وَقِرَّةِand delight of أَعْيُنٍeyes
مُحبُّوهُ في نُعْمَى وَقِرَّةِ أَعْيُنٍ
وَحُسَادُهُand his enviers مماfrom what بِانفُسِهِمْin their souls رَمْدُsore-eyed
وَحُسَادُهُ مما بِانفُسِهِمْ رَمْدُ
His admirers dwell in bliss, their eyes filled with delight,
And his enviers are sore-eyed from what lies within their souls.
وَمَاand not النَّاسُpeople إِلاَّexcept عَاثرٌone who stumbles جَنْبَbeside نَاهضٍone who rises
وَمَا النَّاسُ إِلاَّ عَاثرٌ جَنْبَ نَاهضٍ
وَمَاand not الأَرْضُthe earth إِلاَّexcept الغَوْرُthe lowland جَاوَرَهُadjoins it النَّجْدُthe highland
وَمَا الأَرْضُ إِلاَّ الغَوْرُ جَاوَرَهُ النَّجْدُ
And people are but one who stumbles beside one who rises,
And the earth is but lowland with highland beside it.
