يَاO مَنْone who لَهَاhers is شَرفُthe honor الأصَالَةِnoble lineage
فِيamong المَصْونَاتِthe chaste women الغَوَالِيthe precious ones
O you who possess the honor of noble lineage,
among the chaste, precious women,
وَقَعَتْcame إِلَيْكَto you صَحِيفَةٌa sheet
سَنْتِيسُSantis خَطٍّsketched بِهَاon it مِثَالِيmy likeness
a sheet came into your hands,
on which Santis sketched my likeness.
وَأَبَىand refused عَلَيْهِto him الفنُّart إِلاَّanything but
أَنْto يَعَابِثُplay بِالظِّلاَلِwith the shadows
And art would allow him nothing but
to play with shadows.
فَظَنَنْتُهَاso I thought it مِمَّاamong what يَخُصُّsingles out بِهِwith it
الكِبَارُthe great مِنamong الرِّجَالِmen
So I thought it one of the things reserved for
the great among men.
وَبَذَلْتِand you spent فِيهَاon it مَاwhat بَذَلْتِyou spent
تَكَرُّماًout of generosity وَوَهَبْتِهَاand you gave it لِيto me
And you spent on it what you spent,
out of generosity, and gave it to me.
مَنْwho لِيfor me بِشُكْرٍwith thanks فِيin
نَفَاسَتِهits preciousness عَلَىin keeping with قَدْرِthe measure of النَّوَالِthe bounty
Who can furnish me with thanks that, in
their worth, match the bounty,
فَاصُوغُso I may fashion وصفَa description of حِلاَكِyour graces مِنْfrom

so I may fashion a description of your graces from
the inspiration of truth, not imagination,
وَإِلَيْكِand to you أُهْدِيهِI offer it وَقَدْand already

أَبْلَغْتُهُI have brought it حَدَّthe height of الكَمَالِperfection
and offer it to you, having
brought it to the height of perfection?

can a copy reveal what lies in
the original—its nobility of character?
