قَدْindeed سُرًّwas delighted لُبْنَانُLebanon بِأنُbecause زُرْتَهُyou visited it
قَدْ سُرًّ لُبْنَانُ بِأنُ زُرْتَهُ
لَكِنْbut شَجَاهُgrieved it نَأْيُكَyour departure العَاجِلُswift
لَكِنْ شَجَاهُ نَأْيُكَ العَاجِلُ
Lebanon was indeed delighted that you visited it,
Lebanon was glad when you visited it
But your swift departure grieved it.
Yet your hasty departure saddened it
عَلَّperhaps الَّذِيthat which فِيin عَامِهِits year فَاتَهْpassed it by
عَلَّ الَّذِي فِي عَامِهِ فَاتَهْ
يُعِيضُcompensates مِنْهُfor it عَامُهُits year القَابِلُcoming
يُعِيضُ مِنْهُ عَامُهُ القَابِلُ
May what it missed this year
May he who missed this year
Be made up for by its coming year.
Be compensated by the coming year
الرَّبْعُthe dwelling إِنْif أَوْحَشْتَهُyou leave it lonely مُقْفِرٌdesolate
الرَّبْعُ إِنْ أَوْحَشْتَهُ مُقْفِرٌ
وَالرَّبْعُand the dwelling إِنْif آنَسْتَهُyou keep it company آهِلُinhabited
وَالرَّبْعُ إِنْ آنَسْتَهُ آهِلُ
The dwelling, if you leave it lonely, is desolate,
The land is desolate when you abandon it
And the dwelling, if you keep it company, is inhabited.
The land is populated when you settle in it
يَاO حُلْيَةًan ornament قَلَّدَهَاwore her as a necklace عَصْرُهَاher age
يَا حُلْيَةً قَلَّدَهَا عَصْرُهَا
وَجِيدُهُand its neck مِنْfrom قَبْلِهاbefore her عَاطِلُunadorned
وَجِيدُهُ مِنْ قَبْلِها عَاطِلُ
O ornament that her age wore as a necklace,
O jewel whom her time has adorned
And its neck before her was bare.
While before her its excellence was idle
يَاO نِعْمَةًa blessing عُلُويِّةًheavenly طَيبُهَاher sweetness
يَا نِعْمَةً عُلُويِّةً طَيبُهَا
عَرْفاin fragrance وَعَرُفاand in kindness سَابِغُabundant شَامِلُall-embracing
عَرْفا وَعَرُفا سَابِغُ شَامِلُ
O heavenly blessing, whose sweetness
O sublime blessing, whose fragrance
In fragrance and kindness is abundant and all-embracing.
Is diffused, encompassing and perfect
يَاO لَمْحَةًa gleam مِنْfrom نُورِthe light رَبِّthe Lord الهُدَىguidance
يَا لَمْحَةً مِنْ نُورِ رَبِّ الهُدَى
يُحَارُis bewildered فِيin أَوْصَافِهَاher attributes القَائِلُthe speaker
يُحَارُ فِي أَوْصَافِهَا القَائِلُ
O gleam from the light of the Lord of guidance,
O gleam from the light of the Lord of guidance
The speaker is at a loss to describe her.
The speaker is perplexed in describing it
عُودِيreturn فَمَاfor ... is not البِرُّkindness بِمُسْتَكْمِلِat all complete
عُودِي فَمَا البِرُّ بِمُسْتَكْمِلِ
إِنْif لَمْnot يَتِمُّcompletes العَاجِلُthe present الآجِلُthe future
إِنْ لَمْ يَتِمُّ العَاجِلُ الآجِلُ
Return, for kindness is not complete
Return, for righteous action is not complete
Unless the future completes the present.
Unless the immediate is connected to the deferred
