God's peace be upon you, O Mary, the pure.
And may I be your ransom, mother, and your ransom, virgin.

You conceived without sin and bore, for redemption,
the Savior of this creation from the yoke of sin.

And you brought him to Egypt, fleeing harm;
for Egypt's sanctuary has always offered refugees safety.

فَفِي وَجْهِهِ أَنَّى يَكُنْ آيَةُ الْفَجرِ
His mind held the sun—or something more radiant than the sun;
so wherever he may be, his face bears the sign of dawn.
تَنَزَّلَhe descended مِنْfrom أَوْجِthe summit الْعُلىthe heights مُتَأَنِّساًbecoming human

لِيفْتَكَّ أَسْرَى المُوبِقَاتِ مِنَ الأَسْرِ
He descended from the summit of the heights, becoming human,
to free the captives of deadly sins from captivity.

He bought them with sufferings whose indignity he bore;
and the worshipped Lord is none other than the one who redeems.

أَفانِينَ ما فِي الْعَالَمِينَ مِنَ الْبِرِّ
And from the many forms of his goodness he revealed to them
the many forms of goodness found in the worlds.

هِيَ الآن أَضْحَتْ جدَّةَ الشَّجرِ النَّضرِ
A little tree shaded him in those days;
now it has become the grandmother of verdant trees.

The Guide walked gently upon it as a child; never wearying,
protective cares fluttered around him as he ran.

And Joseph turned tenderly toward him, the finest one chosen
by God for that task—how exalted a task!
