عَبْدَAbd (servant of) العَزِيزِal-Aziz (the Mighty) لَقَدْindeed جَزِعْتَyou have become distraught
وَلَسْتَand you are not بِالرَّجُلِa man الجَزُوعِeasily distraught
Abd al-Aziz, grief has truly overcome you,
Abd al-Aziz, you have indeed become distraught,
though you are not a man given to despair.
though you are not a man easily distraught.
تَبْكِيyou weep for شَقِيقاًa brother مُجْتَبَىchosen; cherished
قَمِيناًworthy بِحُبِّكَof your love وَالوَلُوعِand ardent devotion
You weep for a cherished brother,
You weep for a cherished brother,
worthy of your love and ardent devotion.
worthy of your love and ardent devotion.
مَنْwho لِيfor me بِأَنْwith the assurance that تَرْقَىcease to flow دُمُوعُكَyour tears
وَالفِدَاءُand the ransom لَهَاfor them دُمُوعِيmy tears
Would that your tears might be lifted away,
Who will still your tears for me,
and my tears be their ransom.
with my tears as their ransom?
بِيin me لاَnot بِكَin you البَرَحُthe severe anguish الَّذيthat
تَشْكُوهُyou lament it مِنْfrom حَرِّthe burning of الضُّلُوعِthe ribs
May the consuming anguish be mine, not yours—
May I, not you, bear the anguish that
the pain you lament from the burning beneath your ribs.
you lament from the burning within your ribs.
مَاhow كَانَwould have been أَيْسَرَeasy كُلevery بَذْلٍsacrifice
مِنْof جِمَامٍrest أَوْor هُجُوعِsleep
How easy it would be to sacrifice
How easy every sacrifice would have been
all repose and sleep,
of rest or sleep,
لَوif كَانَwere ذَاكَthat الرَّاحِلُdeparted one
المَبْكِيُّthe mourned one مَأْمُولَhoped for الرُّجُوعِreturn
if that departed one, so deeply mourned,
if that departed one,
could be hoped to return.
whom we mourn, were expected to return.

Alas for separation! It has split a heart
Alas for parting! It has split a heart
whose constant work was mending fractures.
whose habit is to mend rifts.

But it is fate's decree—have we
But it is fate's decree; have we
anything other than submission?
anything but submission?

of its lands among other lands.
