إِذْwhen قَلَّbecame rare صَادِقُهَاits genuine kind عَلَىthroughout الأَزْمَانِthe ages
May you be ransomed, O you whose eminence was genuine,
May I be your ransom, O you of genuine nobility,
for across the ages, few have been true to such eminence.
when true nobility was rare throughout the ages.
أَمَالُis the outcome? (probable reading) سَبْقِكَyour excelling فِيin مَجَالاتِarenas العُلَىglory
إِدْرَاكُreaching شَأْوِfinish العُمْرِlife قَبْلَbefore أَوَانِdue time
Did the hopes raised by your preeminence in the fields of glory
Was the outcome of your excelling in the arenas of glory
seek to reach life’s furthest bound before its appointed time?
to reach life's finish before your time?
مَنْwhoever كَانَwas فِيin أَوْطَانِهِhis native lands مَاwhat كُنْتَهُyou were it
كَبْرَتْwas great خُسَارَتُهُhis loss عَلَىupon الأَوْطَانِthe native lands
Whoever was to his homelands what you were—
Whoever was in his native lands what you were—
his loss weighs heavily upon those homelands.
his loss was grievous to those lands.
أَيَّمْتَyou widowed نَائِحَةًa mourning woman عَلَيْكَover you وَفِيَّةًfaithful
فَهْيَso she is الغَدَاةُthis morning جَلِيلَةُgreat in الأَحْزَانِsorrows
You have widowed a faithful woman who mourns for you;
You left a faithful woman widowed, lamenting you;
today she is laden with immense sorrows.
so this morning her sorrows are immense.
أَيْتَمْتَyou orphaned وُلْداًchildren نَاعِماًtender أَظْفَارُهُمْtheir nails
حُرِمُواthey were deprived حُنُوَّtender care أَبٍa father عَلَيْهِمْtoward them حَانِيloving
You have orphaned children, their nails still tender,
You orphaned children whose nails were still tender,
deprived of the tenderness of a father who cherished them.
deprived of a loving father's tender care.
يَجِمُfalls silent الفُؤَادُthe heart وَتَسْتَهِلُّand tears flow مِنَfrom الأَسَىgrief
فَتَحِيَّةٌso a greeting بِالمَدْمَعِwith tears الهَتَّانِstreaming
The heart falls silent, while tears stream forth from grief;
The heart falls silent, and tears flow from grief;
so here is a salutation borne on pouring tears.
a greeting, then, with streaming tears.
وَتَرَىand you see عَلَىupon حُسْنٍbeauty مَلامِحَsigns بَثِّهِhis anguish
مِنْfrom قُبْلِbefore عَهْدِacquaintance الطُّفْلِthe child بِالأَشْجَانِwith sorrows
And on a lovely face you see grief’s telltale marks,
And on a fair face you see the signs of his anguish,
before childhood’s appointed acquaintance with sorrows.
before the child has ever known sorrow.

Turn your face toward your Lord, for He
Turn your face toward your Lord; truly He is
is the best guardian for them—and sleep in safety.
an excellent guardian for them; and sleep in safety.
