قَدْindeed بَانَdeparted إِسْكَنْدَرْIskandar وَأبْقَىand left
قَدْ بَانَ إِسْكَنْدَرْ وَأبْقَى
آلَthe family of القَصِيريal-Qasiri فِيin انْتِحابْlamentation
آلَ القَصِيري فِي انْتِحابْ
Iskandar has departed and left
Alexander has vanished yet the
the al-Qasiri family in lamentation.
Clan of Qusairi outlasts in renown
كَانَhe was لَبِيباًdiscerning حرَّnoble السَّجَايَاcharacter traits
كَانَ لَبِيباً حرَّ السَّجَايَا
حُلْوَsweet الْمَعَانِيinner qualities فِيin غَيْرِabsence of عَابْblemish
حُلْوَ الْمَعَانِي فِي غَيْرِ عَابْ
He was discerning, noble in character,
Wise was he, sharp of mind
sweet in spirit, without a flaw.
Sweet of meaning though flawless in rhyme
يَاO أَسَفَاًregret أَنَّهthat he تَوَلَّىpassed away
يَا أَسَفَاً أَنَّه تَوَلَّى
رَيَّانَsap-filled عُودٍstem غَضَّtender الإِهَابْthe skin
رَيَّانَ عُودٍ غَضَّ الإِهَابْ
Alas, that he passed away,
Oh what a pity he’s gone
his stem full of sap, his skin still tender.
A fresh sprig now withered and waned
لَكِنْbut إِلىto أَنْthat أَرَّخُوهُthey recorded his date
لَكِنْ إِلى أَنْ أَرَّخُوهُ
أَوْor قَضَىhe died فِيin زَهْرَةِthe flower of الشَّبَابْyouth
أَوْ قَضَى فِي زَهْرَةِ الشَّبَابْ
But until they recorded his date,
But till the day I date his death
or he died in the flower of youth.
Or he meets his end in youth’s bloom
