Peace upon the Greeks at the dawn of time,
And upon the guardians of the glory and renown they left behind.
إِذاwhen نكبَاتُthe calamities of الحَرْبِwar أَفْنَتْannihilated صُفوفَهُمْtheir ranks

When war's calamities annihilated their ranks,
Their noble deeds and their pride remained unscathed.

Their valor in defense revealed the most wondrous display
Of courage ever seen by a tyrant who hurled the many against the few.

And no king or nation has ever endured
Their suffering from straitened living and affliction.

Young men faced the horrors of every battle,
And did not evade it through betrayal or treachery.

And gray-haired elders and children were made to hunger and thirst,
And tasted, without complaint, the hurt of cold and heat.
وَنُسْوَةٌand women خَيْرٍof goodness بَدَّلتْthey exchanged مِنْfrom نَعِيمِهَاtheir bliss

And virtuous women exchanged their bliss
For hell, and so became angels of charity.

Those are a people whose souls cannot be subdued,
For those souls were built upon endurance.

And their enemies have been swept from their homes,
And those homes restored to free people in a free homeland.

Will their sky become a dwelling place for fog,
When of old it has been the mirror of the sun and full moon?

The valor of those who reject oppression, in charge and retreat—

She has indeed proved, age after age, that she
Is a bearer of heroes, age after age,

To her dominion stretching over sea and land.

Joy to her for what she won through her struggle,
And for the love she found from Egypt in her striving.

For good neighbors, when they are in earnest,
Do not forget the bonds between the two lands.

To you, sons of the Greeks, a greeting from me,
My heart sang it, and my verse echoed it.
