وَأَدِمْهُand let him endure كَالشَّمسِlike the sun فِيin الإِشْراقِradiance
O Lord, protect Faisal, King of Iraq,
My Lord, make Faisal a guardian of Iraq
And keep him, like the sun, ever radiant.
And let him shine upon it like the rising sun
ذَلِكَthat النَّورُlight هَلْquestion marker يُحْاكِيmatches سَنَاهَits radiance

That light—can one match its radiance
Can that light be matched in brilliance
With ink poured out in describing it?
By any ink used to describe him?

A king whom, above the greatest of humankind,
A king above the greatest of creations
Noble virtues have rightly exalted.
Exalted by the truth of noble morals

He ruled the people in a land he tended,
He rules people in lands he tended
With his gentle, subtle ways.
With his gentle, subtle methods
لَيْسَis not عَنْfrom دَعْوَةِthe call الجِّهادِstruggle وَلاَnor عَنْfrom

Neither from the call to struggle nor from
Neither hesitant to call for jihad
Aid to the country is he held back.
Nor to rescue countries by freeing slaves

He holds his life and treasures cheap, offering them
He spends himself and riches generously
For the sake of fulfilling the covenant.
To uphold his covenant faithfully
صَارَbecame حُلْوَsweet المُذَاقِto the taste فِيin عَهْدِهِhis reign
الحِكْمُrule وَمِنْand from قَبْلُbefore كَانَwas مُرَّbitter المُذَاقِto the taste
In his reign, it became sweet to the taste—
In his era rule turned sweet
Rule, which before had been bitter to the taste.
Though once it was bitter to endure
وَجْهُهُhis face دَائِمُalways الطَّلاَقةِcheerful openness بِالبِشْرِwith gladness

His face is ever bright with good cheer,
His face always lights up with good news
And the river of his generosity flows freely.
And his river of generosity flows freely
بِنَدَاهُwith his dew سَقَىhe watered فَأَرْوَىand thus quenched ثُرَاهَاits soil

With his dew he watered and quenched its soil's thirst,
With his call he watered its fertile land
And with wisdom protected it from flooding.
And protected it from excess
فَأَعَادَso he restored العَرَاءَthe open land مِنْfrom بَعْدِafter عُطْلٍbareness

So he made the open land, after its bareness,
He brought life back to the barren wasteland
Adorned anew with flowers and leaves.
With flowers and leaves

Indeed, Baghdad wears fresh ornaments from him,
Baghdad is now adorned by his bracelets
Added to her ancient adornments.
In addition to her own jewels

Every refined art has been renewed within her,
Every fine art flourished anew there
And bears the splendor of the refined past.
With an allure of antiquity

May God support his rule and protect him
From every assailing turn of fate by a guardian.
From every plotting enemy
