A radiance in which the West discerned guidance,

and welcomed it with joy when it appeared.

Through it there appeared, for the mother of languages,

splendid ornaments whose sight awed the West.

So the mother of sons who have fallen short

honors her portrayer, who brings her joy.

    She honors a virtuous genius,

faithful in conveying, truthful in echo.

He revealed her excellence to those ignorant of her,

and unveiled her peerless gems, those bashful maidens.

    In wording that, though foreign,

matched fine Arabic speech in beauty.

Its brightness has radiance from her radiance,

and its leafy growth, dew from her dew.

The music-lover, moved by its rhythm, almost

repeats it as a melody, singing aloud.

He showed them a marvel through that wondrous art,

pure in substance and sweet at its source.

And disclosed to them, from the treasures of intellect,

what rouses the envious to covet them.

Treasures whose precious contents they will raid,

and take captive their appointed guardian.

So if they do—and they will—

and a man in life follows his accustomed ways,

as they drained the East, on land and sea,

so they left neither pearls nor gold.

These precious things, then, are the remnants of glory,

bearing witness to our most glorious past.

Our pride is not harmed when they are freely shared,

nor our standing, when they are sought as gifts.

Oh, would that they had left everything else alone

long ago, and stretched a hand toward these!

Yet, after much difficulty, they learned

    our nation's nobility of origin.

    For eloquence such as this

deserves, as he wished, to endure forever,

    and souls like those souls

shall return tomorrow in their sons.

This pride has risen high among glories

for us, and truth refuses to be denied.

So do not be dismayed—for it is that pure gold—

if ever we see critics of it.

They want us to build poetry

    many-sided, far-reaching in scope.

Yet they have not understood the single verse we build,

which ranges to the farthest reach.

Its adornments rival the flowers of gardens,

and its meaning draws down the Farqad star.

O Wasif, hail to you as a forerunner,

and as a generous soul whose example is followed!

You sought it, a rugged goal,

and reached it, victorious and strong,

with fine judgment and noble endeavor,

worthy of praise for all time.

Thus is resolve directed along its proper course,

and endeavors do not go to waste.
