حُورِيَّةa nymph لاَحَتْappeared لَنَاto us تَنْثَنِيswaying
كَالغُصْنِlike a branch حَيَّاهُgreeted it الصِّبَاthe east wind حِينَwhen هَبْblew
A nymph appeared before us, swaying,
A maiden passed by bending softly
like a branch greeted by the east wind as it blew.
Like a branch its youth the zephyr breathes into
مَرَّتْshe passed فَمَاand there was no فِيin الْحَيِّthe quarter إِلاَّexcept فَتَىًa young man
فُؤَادُهُhis heart فِيإِثْرِهَاin her wake قَدْalready ذَهَبْhad gone
She passed, and every young man in the quarter
She walked on and none alive but one
was left with his heart gone in her wake.
Whose heart to follow her had flown

يُوقِعُinstills فِيin الأًنْفُسِthe souls مِنْهَاof her الرَّهَبْawe
The radiance of her eyes, whenever she gazes,
When her glances fall they strike
fills souls with awe of her.
Awe within the soul that's like
وَالْوجْهُand the face كَالْجَنَّةlike paradise حُسْناًin beauty فَإِنْso if
ظَنَنْتَyou thought عَدْناًEden قَدْindeed تَرَاءَتْappeared فَهَبْthen be awed
And her face is like paradise in beauty; if
Her face is beautiful as heaven's bowers
you think Eden has appeared, then stand in awe.
Think you Eden unto sight now flowers

And her hair, arrayed upon her head,
Her hair lies curled upon her head
like pure gold, shone and blazed.
Like burning hyacinths, rich red

It resembles a fountain of light, whose
Resembling torches brightly burning
rays ripple with reddish-gold hues.
Their arrows darting, rays sunward turning

And many a beholder of its profusion
Full many a questioned glance have I
glorified the Giver for what he bestowed,
Sent up in praise of God on high
وَصَاحَand cried out مَذْهُولاًastonished أَلاَlo! فَانْظُرُواso look, all of you
فِيin هَذِهِthis الأَزْمَةِthe crisis هَذَاthis الذَّهَبْthe gold
and cried out, astonished: "Look now
And cried in wonder, "Look now, look
at this gold amid this crisis!
On this bright treasure, this beauty unsoiled!"
اعْجَبْmarvel بِهِat it كَنْزاًas a treasure عَلَىupon ذُرْوَةٍa summit

Marvel at it—a treasure upon a summit:
A jewel she on peak of fame
whenever the gaze rises toward it, it plunders it."
When eyes fly to her, seized with shame.
