أُضيئَتْ لِلْهُدَى نَارُ

أُضيئَتْ لِلْهُدَى نَارُ

وَزِينَتْ لِلْقَرَى الدَّارُ

وَزِينَتْ لِلْقَرَى الدَّارُ

A fire was lit for guidance,

The light was lit as guidance

And the house was adorned for hospitality.

And homes were adorned as dwellings

وَحَيَّتْ مَنْ لَهَا فِي الشَّرقِ

وَحَيَّتْ مَنْ لَهَا فِي الشَّرقِ

حَيْثُ تَحِلُّ إِكْبَارُ

حَيْثُ تَحِلُّ إِكْبَارُ

And it welcomed one who, in the East,

It greeted whoever in the east it descended upon

Is held in esteem wherever she alights.

Wherever the great ones alight

فَفِي لُبْنَانَ تِرْحَابٌ

فَفِي لُبْنَانَ تِرْحَابٌ

بِمَوْكِبِهَا وَإِبْشارُ

بِمَوْكِبِهَا وَإِبْشارُ

For in Lebanon there is a welcome

So in Lebanon is a wide expanse

For her procession, and rejoicing.

With its procession and good tidings

عَزِيزةُ مِصْرَ إِنْ زَارَتْ

عَزِيزةُ مِصْرَ إِنْ زَارَتْ

فَكُلُّ قُرَاهُ أَمْصَارُ

فَكُلُّ قُرَاهُ أَمْصَارُ

If Egypt's beloved visits,

Precious is Egypt when visited

Then all its villages are cities.

For all its villages are metropolises

بِسُوقِ الْغَرْبِ مُنْتجَعٌ

بِسُوقِ الْغَرْبِ مُنْتجَعٌ

لَهُ فِي النَّفْسِ إِيثَارُ

لَهُ فِي النَّفْسِ إِيثَارُ

In Souk al-Gharb there is a retreat

In the markets of the West are retreats

For which the soul has a special fondness.

That hold in the soul generosity

يُنِيلُ الرَّائِدُ المُصْطَافُ

يُنِيلُ الرَّائِدُ المُصْطَافُ

مَا يَهْوَى وَيَخْتَارُ

مَا يَهْوَى وَيَخْتَارُ

It grants the exploring summer visitor

The obtainer picks whatever he desires and prefers

Whatever he desires and chooses.

Orchards flourished in it

تَرَعْرَعَ فِيهِ جَنَّاتٌ

تَرَعْرَعَ فِيهِ جَنَّاتٌ

وَتَينَعُ فِيهِ أَثْمَارُ

وَتَينَعُ فِيهِ أَثْمَارُ

Gardens have flourished there,

And fruits ripened in it

And fruits ripen there;

And birds sing in it

وَتَشْدُو فِيهِ أَطْيَارٌ

وَتَشْدُو فِيهِ أَطْيَارٌ

تُجَاوِبُهُنَّ أَوْتَارُ

تُجَاوِبُهُنَّ أَوْتَارُ

And birds sing there,

With strings responding to them

Strings answer them.

And minted images bring solace to the soul

وَتَشفَى النَّفْسَ آصَالٌ

وَتَشفَى النَّفْسَ آصَالٌ

بَديعَاتٌ وَأسْحَارُ

بَديعَاتٌ وَأسْحَارُ

And the soul is healed by late afternoons,

Wondrous and magical

Wondrous ones, and by predawn hours.

And a night whose sides are green

وَلَيْلٌ أَخْضَرُ الْجَنَبَاتِ

وَلَيْلٌ أَخْضَرُ الْجَنَبَاتِ

تَرْتَعُ فِيهِ أَنْوارُ

تَرْتَعُ فِيهِ أَنْوارُ

And a night with verdant flanks,

With lights grazing in it

In which lights graze.

And winds wherever they blow

وَرِيحٌ حَيْثُ مَا هَبَّتْ

وَرِيحٌ حَيْثُ مَا هَبَّتْ

حَمَلَتْهَا الطِّيبَ مِعْطَارُ

حَمَلَتْهَا الطِّيبَ مِعْطَارُ

And a wind, wherever it blows,

The perfume carries aromas

Laden with perfume by a fragrant one.

On a mountain it makes verdant

عَلَى جَبَلٍ تُنَضِّرُهُ

عَلَى جَبَلٍ تُنَضِّرُهُ

يَنَابِيعٌ وَأَنْهَارُ

يَنَابِيعٌ وَأَنْهَارُ

On a mountain made lush

With springs and rivers

By springs and rivers,

Curtains dripped from it

تَدَلَّتْ مِنْهُ أَسْنَادٌ

تَدَلَّتْ مِنْهُ أَسْنَادٌ

وَأَنْجَادٌ وَأَغْوَارُ

وَأَنْجَادٌ وَأَغْوَارُ

Slopes descend from it,

And slopes and caves

And highlands and lowlands,

To a sea encircled by golden trees

إِلى بَحْرٍ تُطَوِّقُ رَمْلَهُ

إِلى بَحْرٍ تُطَوِّقُ رَمْلَهُ

الذَّهَبِيَّ أَشْجَارُ

الذَّهَبِيَّ أَشْجَارُ

To a sea whose sand is encircled—

Refuges for souls within

Its golden sand—by trees.

Destinies fulfilled and settled

مَغَانٍ لِلنُّفوسِ بِهَا

مَغَانٍ لِلنُّفوسِ بِهَا

مُنىً تُقْضَى وَأَوْطَارُ

مُنىً تُقْضَى وَأَوْطَارُ

Abodes for souls, where

Wishes and desires are fulfilled.
