فِنْجَانَةٌa cup أَبْرَزَdisplayed فِيin صُنْعِهَاits making
فِنْجَانَةٌ أَبْرَزَ فِي صُنْعِهَا
دِهْقَانُهَاits master craftsman فَنَّاًan art بدِيعَwondrous المِثَالِthe form
دِهْقَانُهَا فَنَّاً بدِيعَ المِثَالِ
A cup—in its making was displayed
A cup appeared, excelling in its making
By its master craftsman an art of wondrous form.
Its maker an artist of exquisite design
كَانَwas حَرَاماًunlawful كَسْرُهَاbreaking it وَهْيَwhile it لَمْdid not
كَانَ حَرَاماً كَسْرُهَا وَهْيَ لَمْ
تَحْمِلُhold مِنْof القَهْوَةِthe coffee إِلاَّexcept الحَلاَلِwhat is lawful
تَحْمِلُ مِنْ القَهْوَةِ إِلاَّ الحَلاَلِ
Breaking it was unlawful, for it had not
Though it were forbidden to break it, since it
Held any coffee except what was lawful.
Contained only lawful coffee, none but the fine,
لَكِنَّهُbut it إِنْif سَاءَنَاsaddened us خَطْبُهَاits mishap
لَكِنَّهُ إِنْ سَاءَنَا خَطْبُهَا
قَدْindeed سَرَّنَاgladdened us مَاwhat فِيهِin it مِنْof لُطْفٍpleasantness فَالan omen
قَدْ سَرَّنَا مَا فِيهِ مِنْ لُطْفٍ فَال
Yet if its mishap saddened us,
If its fate went awry, what delight we took
The pleasant omen in it has gladdened us.
In its delicate grace did console and shine.
رَاحَتْit went فِدَىas a ransom for خِدْنِthe companion of النَّدَىgenerosity مُصْطَفَىMustafa
رَاحَتْ فِدَى خِدْنِ النَّدَى مُصْطَفَى
آلِthe family of الرِّفَاعِيِّal-Rifa‘i وَهُمْand they خَيْرَthe best آلِfamily
آلِ الرِّفَاعِيِّ وَهُمْ خَيْرَ آلِ
It went as a ransom for generosity’s companion, Mustafa,
It met its doom to save the cheek's soft charm
Of the al-Rifa‘i family—and they are the best of families.
Of Mustafa's line, most noble bloodline.
