سَفَراًa journey وَجَادَand gave freely بِنَفْسهِof himself مُتَطوِّعَاas a volunteer
A caller summoned him to battle, and he resolved
A caller called him to jihad, so they set out
To set forth, and freely offered himself as a volunteer.
On a journey, and he volunteered his soul eagerly
غَلبَتْovercame حَمِيَّتهُhis zeal هَوَاهُhis love لِعِرْسهِfor his wife
فَنَأَىso he went away وَوَدَّعَand bade farewell قلْبَهُhis heart إِذْwhen وَدَّعَاhe said goodbye
His zeal overcame his love for his wife,
His passion for his wedding overcame him
So he went away, bidding his heart farewell as he said goodbye.
So he declined, though he had bidden his heart farewell
وَقَضَتْand spent أَمِينَةُAmina بَعْدَهُafter his departure أَيَّامَهَاher days
فِيin الحُزْنِsorrow غَيْرَnot أَمِينَةٍsecure أَنْthat تُفْجَعَاshe might be bereaved
And Amina spent her days after his departure
After him Amina spent her days
In sorrow, not secure against bereavement.
In sorrow, no longer the carefree Amina
غَرَسَتْshe planted بِصَحْنِin the courtyard of الدَّارِthe house زَهْرَةَa flower نَرْجِسٍnarcissus
لِتكُونَso it would be سَلْوَتَهَاher solace إِلىuntil أَنْthat يَرجِعَاhe returned
She planted a narcissus flower in the house's courtyard,
She planted a narcissus flower in her courtyard
To be her solace until he returned.
To console her until he might return
كَانَتْshe was تُبَالِغُgoing to great lengths فِيin رِعَايَتِهَاcaring for it كَمَاjust as

She lavished care upon it, just as
She tended to it as a mother tends
A mother's eyes watch over a child at the breast,
To her suckling babe
حَتَّىuntil إِذَاwhen مَاemphatic particle جَاءَهَاcame to her عَنْabout بَعْلِهَاher husband
نَبَأٌnews أَصَمَّdeafened المِسْمَعَيْنِboth ears وَرَوَّعَاand terrified
Until, when there came to her about her husband
Until the news reached her about her husband
News that deafened both her ears and filled her with dread,
That deafened the ears and terrified
شُقَّتwas split open مَرَارتُهَاher gallbladder عَلَيْهِover him وَأَوْشَكَتْand she nearly
مِنْfrom هَوْلِthe horror of ذَاكَthat الخَطْبِcalamity أَنْto تَتَصَدَّعَاshatter
Her gallbladder burst in grief for him, and she nearly
Her bitterness over him intensified, and she nearly
Shattered from the horror of that calamity.
Cracked from the horror of that news
وَكَأَنَّand as though ذَاكَthat الرُّزْءَloss قَبْلَbefore وُقُوعهِits occurrence
مِمَّاfrom how شَجَاهَاit grieved her لَمْnot يَكُنْhad been مُتَوَقَّعَاexpected
And it was as though that loss, before it came,
As if that calamity, before befalling,
Had not been expected, so deeply did it grieve her.
Was not something she had anticipated
فَتفقَّدَتْthen she checked on صُبْحاًone morning أَلِيفَتَهَاher companion الَّتِيwhich
كَانَتْit was سَلَتْهَاconsoled her حَسْرَةًsorrow وَتَوَجُّعاand anguish
Then one morning she looked in on her companion, which
So in the morning she checked on her dear friend
Had consoled her in sorrow and anguish.
Who had consoled her sorrow and anguish
فَإِذَاthen, behold نَضارَتُهاits freshness ذَوَتْhad withered وَكَأَنَّهاand as though it were

Then, behold, its freshness had withered, and it was like
And found that its radiance had faded, as if
An eye from which sorrow had made tears flow.
Grief had caused tears to flow from it
