السَّعدُgood fortune أَعْطىgave فوَفَّىand gave in full غيْرَwithout مُعْتذِرِapologizing
السَّعدُ أَعْطى فوَفَّى غيْرَ مُعْتذِرِ
فاغْنَمْso seize صَفَاءَكَyour unclouded joy مَوْفُوراًabundant عَلىaccording to قَدَرِdestiny
فاغْنَمْ صَفَاءَكَ مَوْفُوراً عَلى قَدَرِ
Good fortune gave, and gave in full, without apology;
The happy man gave freely without excuses
So seize your unclouded joy, abundant as fate ordained.
So enjoy your purity to the full extent
جَدرْتَyou were worthy بِالنِّعمَةِof the blessing الْكبْرَىthe greatest فَيَسَّرَهَاso it made it easy
جَدرْتَ بِالنِّعمَةِ الْكبْرَى فَيَسَّرَهَا
دَهْرٌTime أَتَمَّfulfilled لَكَfor you الأوْطَارَthe wishes فِيin وَطرِa wish
دَهْرٌ أَتَمَّ لَكَ الأوْطَارَ فِي وَطرِ
You deserved the greatest blessing, so it was made attainable by
You deserved the greatest blessing, so it was made easy
Time, which fulfilled your wishes in a single wish.
By time which gave you perfect cycles during your lifetime
فَفُزْso win بِمَاwith whatever شِئْتَyou wished مِنْof لُطْفٍgentleness وَمِنْand of أَدَبٍrefinement
فَفُزْ بِمَا شِئْتَ مِنْ لُطْفٍ وَمِنْ أَدَبٍ
وَمِنْand of عَفَافٍchastity وَمِنْand of ظرْفٍcharm وَمِنْand of حَوَرِdark pupils against bright whites
وَمِنْ عَفَافٍ وَمِنْ ظرْفٍ وَمِنْ حَوَرِ
So win whatever you wish of gentleness and refinement,
So take whatever refined behavior, discipline,
And chastity, charm, and dark-eyed beauty,
Decency, wit and charm you desire
فِيin غادَةٍa maiden لَمْdid not تُطالِعْهَاbehold her وَقدْand indeed سَمَحَتْgranted leave
فِي غادَةٍ لَمْ تُطالِعْهَا وَقدْ سَمَحَتْ
عَيْنُthe eye الْعِنايَةِProvidence إِلاَّexcept أَعْينُthe eyes الْفِكَرِthoughts
عَيْنُ الْعِنايَةِ إِلاَّ أَعْينُ الْفِكَرِ
In a maiden whom no eyes have beheld—though leave was granted
In a young woman whom the eyes of Providence
By Providence's eye—save the eyes of thought.
Have not looked upon except the eyes of thought
مَحْجُوبَةِveiled النُّورِthe radiance إِلاَّexcept حَيْثُwhere نمَّrevealed بِهَاof her
مَحْجُوبَةِ النُّورِ إِلاَّ حَيْثُ نمَّ بِهَا
مِنْfrom خَالِصِpure الشِّعرِpoetry وَصْفٌa description خَالِدُenduring الأَثرthe imprint
مِنْ خَالِصِ الشِّعرِ وَصْفٌ خَالِدُ الأَثر
Her radiance veiled, except where she was revealed
Veiled from light except where described through it
By a description in pure poetry, whose imprint endures.
Pure poetry whose effect is eternal
شِعْرٌpoetry حَوَىcontained كلَّevery مَعْنىًmeaning غيْرِnot مُفْترَعٍpreviously broached
شِعْرٌ حَوَى كلَّ مَعْنىً غيْرِ مُفْترَعٍ
فِيin خَيْرِthe finest مَاwhat يَلْبَسُwears المَعْنَىthe meaning مِنَof الصُّوَرِforms
فِي خَيْرِ مَا يَلْبَسُ المَعْنَى مِنَ الصُّوَرِ
Poetry embracing every meaning never broached before,
Poetry which contained every unfabricated meaning
In the finest forms that meaning can wear;
In the best attire meaning can wear
لمُفْرَدٍby a peerless man بَلَغَتْreached بِالحَقِّrightfully شُهْرَتُهُhis fame
لمُفْرَدٍ بَلَغَتْ بِالحَقِّ شُهْرَتُهُ
أَقْصَىthe furthest مَبَالِغِهَاits reaches فِيamong الْبَدْوِnomads وَالحَضَرِand townsfolk
أَقْصَى مَبَالِغِهَا فِي الْبَدْوِ وَالحَضَرِ
By a peerless man whose fame has rightfully reached
For an individual whose fame for truthfulness
Its furthest bounds, among nomads and townsfolk.
Reached the utmost extremes both in desert and town
لاno سِرَّsecret لِلْغَابِof the forest إِلاّexcept وهْيَand it تُنْبِئُهُtells him
لا سِرَّ لِلْغَابِ إِلاّ وهْيَ تُنْبِئُهُ
بِهِof it خِلاَلَamid تَنَاجِيthe whispered converse الرِّيحِthe wind وَالشَّجرِand the trees
بِهِ خِلاَلَ تَنَاجِي الرِّيحِ وَالشَّجرِ
The forest has no secret that it does not tell him,
No secret in the wilderness except it informs him
Amid the whispered converse of the wind and trees.
Through the intimate whispers of wind and trees
وَلاand no يَطِيبُis sweet شَذاfragrance إِلاexcept مُشَاطَرَةًbeing shared
وَلا يَطِيبُ شَذا إِلا مُشَاطَرَةً
بَيْنَbetween الضّمِيرِthe inner consciousness الَّذِيthat يَحْكِيهِechoes it وَالزُّهَرِand the flowers
بَيْنَ الضّمِيرِ الَّذِي يَحْكِيهِ وَالزُّهَرِ
And no fragrance is sweet except when shared
No fragrance is sweet unless it is shared
Between the heart that echoes it and the flowers.
Between the conscience that tells it and the flowers
وَلاَnor تُكَاتِمُهُconceals from him الظَّلمَاءُdarkness خَاطِرَهَاits thought
وَلاَ تُكَاتِمُهُ الظَّلمَاءُ خَاطِرَهَا
وَلاَnor اْلأَشِعَّةthe rays مَاwhat تَرْوِيthey recount عَنِabout الزُّهَرِthe stars
وَلاَ اْلأَشِعَّة مَا تَرْوِي عَنِ الزُّهَرِ
Nor does darkness hide its thought from him,
No darkness conceals its thoughts from him
Nor do the rays hide what they recount of the stars.
No rays what they show of the flowers
رَوَائِعُthe marvels الخَلْقِcreation حَلَّتْsettled مِنْwithin سَرِيرتِهِhis innermost being
رَوَائِعُ الخَلْقِ حَلَّتْ مِنْ سَرِيرتِهِ
فِيin مَجْمَعٍa gathering-place لِشتِيتِfor the scattered forms of الْفنِّart مُخْتَصَرcompact
فِي مَجْمَعٍ لِشتِيتِ الْفنِّ مُخْتَصَر
Creation's marvels have settled within his innermost being,
Marvels of creation extracted from his privacy
In a compact gathering-place for art's scattered forms.
In a compilation of scattered arts summarized
لاَno بِدْعَwonder أَنْthat أَخذَتْtook مِنْهَاfrom them كرِيمَتُهُhis daughter
لاَ بِدْعَ أَنْ أَخذَتْ مِنْهَا كرِيمَتُهُ
خُلاَصةَthe essence الحُسْنِbeauty وَاْلآدَابِand refinement وَالْخَفَرِand modesty
خُلاَصةَ الحُسْنِ وَاْلآدَابِ وَالْخَفَرِ
No wonder that his daughter drew from them
Needless to say, his noble one took from them
The essence of beauty, refinement, and modesty.
The essence of beauty, etiquette and grace
فَاسْتَجْمَعَتْso she gathered شِيَمَthe virtues الأَمْلاَكِthe angels وَاكتَمَلَتْand became perfect
فَاسْتَجْمَعَتْ شِيَمَ الأَمْلاَكِ وَاكتَمَلَتْ
رُوحاًin spirit وَجِسْماًand in body بِلاَwithout عَيْبٍflaw وَلاَnor وَضَرِstain
رُوحاً وَجِسْماً بِلاَ عَيْبٍ وَلاَ وَضَرِ
So she gathered the virtues of angels and became perfect
She gathered the demeanor of royalty and was completed
In spirit and body, without flaw or stain.
In body and soul without fault or blemish
تِلْكَthat الأَمَانَةُthe entrusted charge وافَتْcame to خَيْرَthe best مُؤتَمَنٍa trusted keeper
تِلْكَ الأَمَانَةُ وافَتْ خَيْرَ مُؤتَمَنٍ
مِنَamong الْكِرَامِthe noble كِرَامِnoble الْخُبْرِfirsthand acquaintance وَالخَبَرِand reputation
مِنَ الْكِرَامِ كِرَامِ الْخُبْرِ وَالخَبَرِ
That trust has come to the worthiest guardian,
That honesty met the best trustee
Among noble men, noble in proven character and repute.
Of the generous, experienced and expert
مِنْfrom مَعْشَرٍa people هُمْthey عَنَاوِينُemblems الْفَخارِglory إِذَاwhen
مِنْ مَعْشَرٍ هُمْ عَنَاوِينُ الْفَخارِ إِذَا
مَاemphatic particle خُلِّدَتْwere immortalized غُرَرُthe choicest الآثَارِachievements فِيin السِّيرِchronicles
مَا خُلِّدَتْ غُرَرُ الآثَارِ فِي السِّيرِ
From a people who are emblems of glory whenever
Of a people who are the epitomes of pride whenever
The finest achievements are immortalized in chronicles.
The pearls of relics are immortalized in history
فَتَىa young man تَمَثَّلwas embodied فِيهِin him طِيبُthe goodness عُنْصُرِهِhis lineage
فَتَى تَمَثَّل فِيهِ طِيبُ عُنْصُرِهِ
عَفُّchaste الضَّميرِthe conscience نقِيُّpure الوِرْدِthe draught of water وَالصَّدرِand the heart
عَفُّ الضَّميرِ نقِيُّ الوِرْدِ وَالصَّدرِ
A young man in whom the goodness of his lineage is embodied,
A young man in whom his fine origin was embodied
Chaste of conscience, pure in his draught and heart.
Gentle conscience, pure affection and chest
ناطَتْpinned رجَاءًa hope بِهِon him مِصْرٌEgypt فحَقَّقهُso he fulfilled it
ناطَتْ رجَاءً بِهِ مِصْرٌ فحَقَّقهُ
قَبْلَbefore اْلأَوَانِthe due time بِصِدْقِwith sincerity of العَزْمِresolve وَالنَّظَرِand judgment
قَبْلَ اْلأَوَانِ بِصِدْقِ العَزْمِ وَالنَّظَرِ
Egypt pinned a hope on him, and he fulfilled it
Egypt placed hope in him and he fulfilled it
Ahead of time, through true resolve and sound judgment.
Before the time due to honesty of purpose and foresight
ياO كَوْكبَيْنِtwo stars غنِمْنَاwe gained فِيin لِقَائِهِمَاtheir meeting
يا كَوْكبَيْنِ غنِمْنَا فِي لِقَائِهِمَا
صَفْوَserenity الزَّمَانِtime وَأُنْسَand delight السَّمْعِhearing وَالبَصرand sight
صَفْوَ الزَّمَانِ وَأُنْسَ السَّمْعِ وَالبَصر
O two stars, in whose meeting we have gained
O two planets we gained in their meeting
Time's serenity, and delight for ear and eye.
The essence of time, pleasure of hearing and sight
للّهِto God عُرْسُكُمَاthe wedding of you both وَالدَّهْرُand Time مُبْتِسمٌsmiling
للّهِ عُرْسُكُمَا وَالدَّهْرُ مُبْتِسمٌ
وَاللَّيْلُand night أَوْهىthe frailest نَسِيلٍfrayed fabric شَفَّgrew translucent عَنrevealing سَحَرِdawn
وَاللَّيْلُ أَوْهى نَسِيلٍ شَفَّ عَن سَحَرِ
God be praised for your wedding, while Time smiles,
God bless your wedding and time smiles
And night is the frailest gauze, through which dawn shows.
The night melts revealing the dawn
لَوْif أَنَّthat دَعْوَةَa prayer صَافِيone pure in الْوُدِّlove مُخِلدَةٌgranting immortality
لَوْ أَنَّ دَعْوَةَ صَافِي الْوُدِّ مُخِلدَةٌ
لَقُلتُI would say دَومَاendure, both of you دَوَامَas long as الشِّمسِthe sun وَالْقَمرِand the moon
لَقُلتُ دَومَا دَوَامَ الشِّمسِ وَالْقَمرِ
If the prayer of one pure in love could grant immortality,
If the wish of a loving friend lasts forever
I would say: 'Endure, both of you, as long as the sun and moon.'
I would say, may it last eternally as the sun and moon
