مَرِضْتُI fell ill فَمَاso not أَوْشَكْتُI was about to لَوْلاَكَwere it not for you أَنْto أَرىI regard
بَقَاءًcontinued life جَدِيراًworthy فَقْدُهُits loss بِالتَّأسُّفِof regret
I fell ill, and but for you I would scarcely have seen
I fell ill; but for you, I would hardly have regarded
any continued life whose loss deserved regret.
continued life as something whose loss deserved regret.
فَهَلاَّso why not وَهَذَاand this أَنَّتyou (apparently intended) مِنِّيto me وَحَاجَتِيand my need
لِقَاؤُكَmeeting you أَسْتَشْفيI seek healing بِهِthrough it كُنْتَyou were مُسْعِفِيmy helper
Why not—when this is what you are to me, and my need
Why then—such is your place with me, and my need
is to meet you and seek healing thereby—would you not be my aid?
is to meet you, seeking healing in it—did you not come to my aid?
أَيَشْمَتُwill they gloat? فِينَاover us عَاذَلُونَreproachers يَسُرُّهُمْit delights them
تَفَرُّقُthe breaking apart هَذَاthis الشَّملِthe union بَعْدَafter التَّأَلُّفِharmony
Shall reproachers gloat over us—those who delight
Will those who reproach us gloat over us, delighted
in the scattering of this union after harmony?
by the breaking of this union after its harmony?
بِرَبِّكby your Lord إِنْif تَمْرَرْyou pass بِجَانِبِbeside مَنْزِلٍa house
مُفَدِّيكِone who would ransom you فِيهِin it عِجْturn aside بِهِto it وَتَلَطَّفِand be kind
By your Lord, if you pass beside a dwelling
By your Lord, if you pass beside a house
where one who would ransom you dwells, turn aside and stop there graciously.
where one who would ransom you lives, stop there and be kind.
وَغَيْرُand not كَثِيرٍmuch زَوْرَةًa single visit أَنْto تَزُورَهَاyou make that visit
لِحَوْلٍin a year وَلَوْand even if جَاءَتْit came بِبَعْضِwith some التَّكلُّفِeffort
It would hardly be visiting too often, were you to visit it
And a single visit is not too much for you to pay
after a year—even if the visit required some effort.
in a year, even if it entails some effort.
