In my heart is the same sorrow that is in yours.
In my heart is a sorrow like yours,
And my eyelids bear sleeplessness like yours.
And my eyelids are as heavy with sleep as yours.
كَيْفَhow لاَnot أُطْلِقُI release دَمْعِيmy tears وَلَقَدْand indeed
كُنْتُI was مَاas long as عِشْتُI lived أَسِيراًa captive لِوِدَادِكْto your affection
How could I not let my tears flow, when indeed
How can I not shed a tear when
All my life I have been a captive to your affection?
I have always been a prisoner of your love?
يَاO فَتَىyoung man الأَخْلاَقِmoral virtues وَالآدَابِand letters كَمْhow many

O noble youth, so many
Among those who love you share in your mourning!
Join me in mourning for you.

How many a man of learning and merit esteems
How many learned, virtuous men
In their fields, the worth of your striving!
Strive in their fields as hard as you strove.
جَلَّwas grave فِيin أَوْحَدِكَyour only son الخَطْبُthe calamity كَمَاjust as

Grave was the calamity of losing your only son, just as
You were supreme among your peers,
Grave was your country's calamity of losing its peerless one.
As your country was supreme among lands.
كَانَhe was فِيamong نَشْءِthe youth of الحِمَىthe homeland نَابِغَةًa prodigy

He was a prodigy among the homeland's youth,
In defending the faith you were
Following in your footsteps toward your loftiest aim.
A rising star tracing your lofty goals.
فَرَمَىthen hurled الدَّهْرُTime بِهِhim مِنْfrom حَالِقٍa lofty height

Then Time hurled him from a lofty height.
But fate cast you down from your saddle,
Do not entrust the handling of your reins to despair.
Do not let despair sway your reins.

And part of kindness to the one you mourn is that
It is kind to mourn one you weep for, so long
Bereavement should not be stronger than your sound judgment.
As grief strengthens, and does not misguide, your heart.

For he left behind a child who has no
You left a child no older than your sorrow,
Help, after his father's loss, to match your watchful care.
Needing care to replace your fatherly watch.

Devote, as much as you can, to his upbringing
Give him all the tenderness your shade nursed,
Every store of tenderness within your being.
And teach him to walk the paths his father trod.

His father in stature, through your diligence.

This is an offering to God; if
O God, unite us though parted by sorrow,
You increase it, it will be your finest provision with Him.
You know best, my God, what we need.

You know best, O my God, Your own purpose.
And incline their steps towards your guidance.

Comfort the beloved in his loneliness,
And may the downpour of Your recurring rains repel his grave [possibly intended: make it verdant].
