عَلِيُّAli تَرْعَاكَwatches over you عُيُونُthe eyes العَلِيof the Most High
عَلِيُّ تَرْعَاكَ عُيُونُ العَلِي
أَنْتَyou رَجَاءُthe hope الزَّمَنِof the age المُقْبِلِto come
أَنْتَ رَجَاءُ الزَّمَنِ المُقْبِلِ
Ali, may the eyes of the Most High watch over you.
Ali, the exalted eyes of the lofty one look to you
You are the hope of the age to come.
You are the hope of the coming age
مَاwhat يَبْلُغُreaches الإِطْرَاءُpraise مِنْof سَيِّدٍa lord
مَا يَبْلُغُ الإِطْرَاءُ مِنْ سَيِّدٍ
فَوْقَabove الثُّرَيَّاthe Pleiades قَدْرُهُhis stature مُعْتَلِيrising high
فَوْقَ الثُّرَيَّا قَدْرُهُ مُعْتَلِي
How can praise reach a lord
No flattery can reach a lord
Whose stature rises above the Pleiades?
Whose worth transcends the Pleiades
قَدْindeed أَمَّنَhas secured المُلْكُthe throne عَلَىconcerning عَهْدِهِits succession
قَدْ أَمَّنَ المُلْكُ عَلَى عَهْدِهِ
بِأْنِجبِwith the noblest الأبْنَاءِof sons وَالأفْضَلand the best
بِأْنِجبِ الأبْنَاءِ وَالأفْضَل
The throne has secured its succession
The kingdom has been secured in his era
With the noblest of sons and the best,
With the best and noblest of sons
بِأَرْبَطِwith the most steadfast الإقْيَالِof princes فِيin المُلْتَقَىbattle
بِأَرْبَطِ الإقْيَالِ فِي المُلْتَقَى
جَاْشَاًin courage وَبِالإفَصَحِand with the most eloquent فِيin المَحْفِلِthe assembly
جَاْشَاً وَبِالإفَصَحِ فِي المَحْفِلِ
With the firmest of princes in battle,
With the firmest determination in gatherings
In courage, and the most eloquent in assembly.
Fervent and most eloquent in assemblies
حُرُّnoble السَّجَايَاin disposition زَانَهُadorned him رَبَّهُhis Lord
حُرُّ السَّجَايَا زَانَهُ رَبَّهُ
فِيin خُلْقِهِhis nature بِالخُلُقِwith character الأمْثَلِthe finest
فِي خُلْقِهِ بِالخُلُقِ الأمْثَلِ
Noble in disposition, his Lord adorned him
The free man whom his Lord adorned
In his nature with the finest character.
With the finest traits and character
أَيُّwhat مَقَامٍstation لِلنَّدَىfor generosity وَالهُدىand guidance
أَيُّ مَقَامٍ لِلنَّدَى وَالهُدى
لَيْسَis not عَلِيٌّAli فِيهِin it بِالأوَّلِthe foremost
لَيْسَ عَلِيٌّ فِيهِ بِالأوَّلِ
What station of generosity and guidance
What station of guidance and virtue
Is there in which Ali is not foremost?
Where Ali is not the forefront
مُعْتَصِمٌholding fast بِالخَيْرِto goodness مَاas far as اسْطَاعَهُhe can attain it
مُعْتَصِمٌ بِالخَيْرِ مَا اسْطَاعَهُ
وَلَيْسَand is not لِلشَّرِّof evil بِمُسْتَنْزِلِone who calls down
وَلَيْسَ لِلشَّرِّ بِمُسْتَنْزِلِ
He holds fast to goodness as far as he can,
Holding fast to good as long as he could
And never calls down evil.
With no place for evil in his abode
بَادِيmanifest انْتِسَابٍkinship بِسُمُوِّthrough loftiness الحِجَىof intellect
بَادِي انْتِسَابٍ بِسُمُوِّ الحِجَى
إِلىto نَبِيِّthe Prophet العَرَبِof the Arabs المُرْسَلthe one sent forth
إِلى نَبِيِّ العَرَبِ المُرْسَل
His lofty intellect makes his kinship plain
His lineage rising with exalted dignity
With the Prophet of the Arabs, the Messenger.
To the Messenger of Arabs, the Prophet
إِنْif وَأَلَseek refuge القَوْمُthe people فَمِنْthen from بَأْسِهِhis might
إِنْ وَأَلَ القَوْمُ فَمِنْ بَأْسِهِ
يَأْوَوْنَthey take refuge فِيamid الضَّيْمِoppression إِلَىto مُؤْئِلِa haven
يَأْوَوْنَ فِي الضَّيْمِ إِلَى مُؤْئِلِ
If the people seek refuge, then through his might
If a people face adversity, by his might
They find a haven when they are oppressed.
They find refuge from harm in his shelter
لاَnot يَأْتَلِيholds back عَنْfrom سَعْيِهhis striving لِلْعُلَىfor the heights
لاَ يَأْتَلِي عَنْ سَعْيِه لِلْعُلَى
وَلَوْand even if شَاءَhe desired كَيْوَانَSaturn لَمْwould not يَأْتَلِhold back
وَلَوْ شَاءَ كَيْوَانَ لَمْ يَأْتَلِ
He never slackens in his striving for the heights,
He does not tire from striving for the sublime
And even if he sought Saturn, he would not falter.
Even if he wished, no weariness would hinder him
أَكْرِمْhow generous بِهِhe is فِيin السِّلْمِpeace مِنْas ذِيone possessing يَدٍa hand
أَكْرِمْ بِهِ فِي السِّلْمِ مِنْ ذِي يَدٍ
تَصُوبُpours down صَوبَlike the pouring of العَارِضِthe raincloud المُسْبَلِshedding rain
تَصُوبُ صَوبَ العَارِضِ المُسْبَلِ
How generous he is in peace, with a hand
Honor him in peace, for his is an open hand
That pours like a rain-shedding cloud!
That flows towards the needy and helpless
أَعْظِمْhow great بِهِhe is فِيin الحَرْبِwar مِنْas قائِدٍa commander
أَعْظِمْ بِهِ فِي الحَرْبِ مِنْ قائِدٍ
يَفْتُكُslays بِالرَّأْيِwith strategy وَبِالمُنْصَلand with the blade
يَفْتُكُ بِالرَّأْيِ وَبِالمُنْصَل
How great he is in war, a commander
Exalt him in war, for he is a commander
Who slays with strategy and with the blade!
Who strikes with wisdom and sharp blades
إِذَاwhen مَشَىhe marches بِالجَيْشِwith the army صَوْبَtoward العِدَىthe foes
إِذَا مَشَى بِالجَيْشِ صَوْبَ العِدَى
فَقَدْthen indeed مَشَىmarch جَيْشَانِtwo armies فِيin جَحْفَلِa mighty host
فَقَدْ مَشَى جَيْشَانِ فِي جَحْفَلِ
When he marches with the army toward the foes,
When he marched with the army towards enemies
Then indeed two armies march in a single mighty host.
It was as if two armies marched in formation
فَيَاso O وَلِيَّheir العَهْدِto the throne فِيin دَوْلَةa realm
فَيَا وَلِيَّ العَهْدِ فِي دَوْلَة
مَكْلُؤَةٍguarded بِالمُصْحَفِby the Qur'an المُنْزَلِrevealed
مَكْلُؤَةٍ بِالمُصْحَفِ المُنْزَلِ
So, O crown prince in a realm
So O heir in a state
Guarded by the revealed Qur'an!
Bound by the revelation descended
