A firebrand appeared from the desert's edge.

Has the age of revelation returned to Sinai?

I gaze toward the lofty Mount and behold

Lightning flashing with a clear portent,

Where the cloud, while God's interlocutor stood terrified,

    Settled with solemn, utter steadiness,

Dark, its sides laden with dread,

With fires pent up within its depths,

Until its Lord spoke, and it split apart

Amid thunderbolts, in radiance and splendor.

And His decrees descended upon its tablet,

    Their signs inscribed in light.

Do you think Providence, after long hardship, has prepared

Deliverance for the East from distress?

And so a space was made available on the tablet of commandments,

Blank, for instruction to begin anew?

And among the sands there remained a prospect

Of a spring bursting from the solid rock?

The time has come for those groping in their darkness

For ages to emerge from the gloom.

Indeed, fortunate in spirit, I am inspired

To heal their infirm and quench the thirsty,

If no leader endowed with strength guides them—

And courage may deliver them from misery.

Is there a bearer of good news, or a capable warner,

Who discerns where their sickness lies,

Who guides them along paths of progress, in keeping

With their times, and along ways to eminence?

Poetry remains, as it has always been,

After prophecy, the place where inspiration descends.

    وَالنُّورُ نُورُ خَيَالِهَا الْوَضَّاء

    And when Truth calls, the voice is poetry's voice;

And the light is the light of its radiant imagination.

O elder of Sinai, where guidance was sent forth

From its wilderness in a radiant sign!

We shall see, as you speak for its rights,

How barren land prevails through the living.

This deputation has honored you, and honored

Through you the standing of men of letters in the land.

So rejoice in its lofty office, even if

Its burdens are among the heaviest burdens.

    Enough of poetry's belittlement—avenge it,

And raise your building above every building.

And show those who wronged its masters

The harms of that crooked policy.

Indeed, mutual shirking, desertion, and hatred

Are the least of the calamities it brought,

Along with peoples' decline from their standing,

And the tyranny of rulers and grandees.

The sons of Ya'rub grieve over an age

In which letters suffered utter misery.

Oppressors dealt unjustly with men of reason in it,

And the learned were enslaved to the ignorant.

And masters imagined, among their peoples,

Their poets to be a class of hired hands.

Yet these were the very men who recited their words to one another,

At times for pride, and for consolation.

And thanks to them, the plantings of their minds were nourished

With the sweetest sustenance from every fruit.

And through a breath from them, their names became

Among names whose memory lives forever.

Through them, correct the view of those who thought them

Instruments of congratulation and condolence for themselves.

Let the homelands witness what their merits are

In high office and in enrichment.

And let the days know their standing

In every stance of dignity and proud refusal.

O reviver of ancient glory through his poetry,

You are the prince; whoever is one through intellect

May, through it, hold his head high above princes.

Today is your festival, a festival embracing

The tongue of ḍād in widely scattered regions.

In Egypt, one of her sons sings,

And his echo is in Bahrain and al-Zawra.

A festival that has united the hearts of her peoples,

Though their inclinations may be many.

How often renewal of her bygone glory was sought,

Only for divided opinions to undo it!

How joyous the sun that appeared to her

After despair, and rose bearing hope!

Poetry brought near a goal beyond the power

Of resolve and valiant endeavor to bring near.

Magic is nothing but Ahmad's poetry, wielding

    Her reins through gentle enchantment.

His wondrous verses have prepared for her delegations

In Egypt, from many nations, the dearest meeting.

    Only a singer awakens peoples,

A melodious one who rouses sleeping echoes.

No! She has no unalloyed pride

Like her pride in her outstanding poets.

O Egypt, outshine every land with those

Great sons of yours whom you have brought forth.

They held for Ahmad an auspicious celebration

Never before reported in any tidings.

Ahmad is nothing but his country's banner,

Fluttering in the East above every banner.

A standard through which the valley towers above the peaks

Of lofty mountains, with a lofty summit.

Its crest smiled; nothing adorned the hills

Upon their crowns like that white ornament.

Is there an equal to Abu Ali among his peers,

When both proceed from ambition and resolve?

Or a poet like Abu Husayn, who takes

In every circumstance the approach of the wise?

He understood life in the truth of its nature,

And loved it abundant in blessings.

He gathers its nearby fruits, and is not deterred by what

Lies before the distant ones of arduous toil.

He fulfills his desires with elegance in living,

And pays glory its due with fullest fidelity.

Great are his gifts, and he has attained all he desired

    Of captivating insight and intelligence.

If you meet him, you meet genius embodied

In a form flashing with brilliance,

Fashioned from venerable beauty, bearing a stamp

Of radiant signs and wondrous loveliness.

Imagination adorned its beauty with its marks,

And lent it its features to endure.

And today, though youth has departed, no trace remains

Upon it that clings to decay.

Nothing is more wondrous, when you sit with him,

Than that man, so near and yet so distant.

He is forever turning his eyes, and within them

    Roll waves of light.

He gazes toward the heights with an exalted glance,

And regards the world without disdain.

    His eyelid graciously overlooks much,

And his conscience is readier still to overlook.

When you speak to him, his voice has

A melody that falls softly upon the soul.

In his speech are precious pearls, which

Ears catch only by listening closely.

Yet that voice, for all its softness,

A sense of honor raises to al-Jawza.

How great is Shawqi, defending his people

And his country in the dreadful crisis!

You can almost hear from the scratching of his reed pen

A roar like lions roaring in battle.

And you see sparks flying as from fire-strikers,

In quick succession amid the black letters.

And feel a wounded life-force bleeding

    In droplets of red ruby.

In every art among the arts of his poetry,

He has remained beyond his peers' aspirations.

As for his forceful eloquence, it is the furthest height

The eloquence of the eloquent has nobly attained.

And his tenderness almost flows through his words

Into the thirsty soul like flowing water.

Were it not for the new ornaments in his verse,

You would attribute it only to the ancients.

The elegant embroidery is wonder enough, flourishing

As it pleases upon the lovely brocade.

A breeze of grace passes through its adornments

As the east wind passes through a luxuriant garden.

His poetic gift tore the curtains aside and came forward,

Utterly captivating the soul's hidden secrets.

And behold, amid his inventions, the eyes

Are conquered by every bashful virgin.

In his singing and lament is an echo of what

The hidden hearts of the living enfold.

Is there anything heard, for voicing the pains of passion,

Like his lamenting and his melodious singing?

His old words stir sorrow like his new,

And I find the old more deeply moving.

For some words are aged; if you taste them,

You find them like well-aged tawny wine.

His wandering verses filled the cities with wisdom,

And raided ignorance's hamlets in the desert.

And brilliant stars appear in the seas of his meters,

As though viewing glasses had drawn them near.

How many, in his stances and his inclinations,

Are delights of art and composition that set one dancing!

How many, in his inspirations and passing thoughts,

Are miracles of creation and expression!

Genius drew for him, through their diversity,

Majestic images in the beholder's eyes.

I have touched on only one aspect of Shawqi,

While his grandeur has many aspects.

Its beauties filled the hearts of his supporters,

And settled firmly in his enemies' souls.

God be praised for Shawqi, calm or raging,

Like the lion, the volcano, and the ocean!

God be praised for Shawqi and his ways of grasping

The rarities of circumstances and things!

In his amusement and his joy, in his pride

    And his conceit, in outpouring and complaint;

In his love for the Nile, which is worship

    Of the provider who returns again with blessings;

In his devotion to his country and his infatuation

    With the beauty of that spacious paradise;

In his description of the blessings bestowed upon it,

    Its lovely springtime dwelling and its wholesome air;

In his proud mention of its monuments

    And the glorious deeds of grandfathers and fathers;

In his pride in its rising, where death

    Strikes down the heads of its gifted youth;

In his gratitude to those who defend its watering places,

    And the martyrs who guard its heartland;

In his urging the champions of its unity toward

Affection that gathers them together, and brotherhood,

Steadying the building by its cornerstone,

    So that its supports and parts hold firm;

In his counsel to pursue knowledge, which for its possessors is

    A safeguard against weakening and collapse;

In his description of marvels created by

    Nations that awoke while we slumbered;

A description wrought with skill, urging his people

To learn from them with the noblest encouragement.

He left no astonishing wonder hidden,

In the earth's belly or on heaven's back.

This, besides what cannot be encompassed in description

By my thought; my praise falls short of its smallest part.

The qualities of genius reached their fullness

In him, and passed beyond the reach of every praise.

So if I falter and fail to give them their due,

My earnest effort may serve as my excuse.

What blame is there on one who turns aside from a goal,

When the race is for equals and peers?

Do you know how great my love for him is? It is

Indeed the fabric of a lifetime of friendship and sacrifice.

O keeper of the pledge, whom I call, without

Fearing that my call will fail with him,

Come to your brother's aid, and grant him help in what

Defeats all eloquent men except you.

The occasion is great, and my aspiration has stumbled with me,

So lift me up—may God reward you with the best reward.

Your nobility allows nothing but that you be seen

Among the first to remain faithful to colleagues.

And the East holds its head high, full of contentment,

At the gifted caring for the gifted.

O you whose affection for me is pure, and for whom is pure

My affection, in prosperity and adversity,

His loyalty strengthened me on the day of defending honor,

And my loyalty strengthened him on the day of defending honor.

    وَمَكَانُهُ الأَسْنَى بِغَيْرِ مِرَاءِ

    And I recognized his place in the assembly of eloquence;

His place, without dispute, is the most exalted.

May this festival bring you joy; keep welcoming

Its like in health and serenity.
