They saw in him the highest ideal, at the utmost height
They saw in him the highest ideal, in the farthest extent
to which heroes and dauntless warriors rose in pursuit of his stature.
To which heroes and minds aspire

He is subjected to exile and torture, while his resolve
He endures exile and torture, yet his resolve
is beyond the grasp of his brutish enemies.
Is beyond what his fierce enemies can grasp
وَand مِصْرُEgypt قَائِمَةٌstanding غَمّاًin grief وَقَاعِدَةٌand sitting
كَاللُّجِّlike the deep sea يَزْخَرُsurges وَالأَمْوَاجُand the waves تَلْتَطِمُcrash against one another
And Egypt stands and sits in sorrow,
And Egypt stands grieving, a foundation
like the surging deep, its waves crashing together.
Like the raging sea with clashing waves
أَيَنْزَعُونَdo they wrench away? مِنَfrom الأُمِّthe mother ابْنَهَاher son جَنَفاًunjustly
وَلاand not يُؤَاخَذُis held accountable بِالإِجْرَامِfor crime مُجْتَرِمُa criminal
Do they unjustly wrench the mother's son from her,
They snatched from the mother her son unjustly
while no criminal is held accountable for crime?
And the criminal is not punished for his crime
بَثَّتْshe poured out أَساهَاher grief بِمَاwith what رِيعَwas terrified الزَّمَانُTime لَهُat it
كَأَنَّمَاas though أَخْرَجَتْbrought forth أَشْبَالَهَاtheir lion cubs الأَجَمُthe thickets
She poured out her grief in a way that terrified Time,
She unleashed her pain at what time has brought him
as though the thickets had sent forth their lion cubs.
As if she had sent forth her young cubs
وَكَانَand was أَيْسَرthe easiest مَبْذُولٍsomething offered أَعَزُّthe dearest فِدًىransom

And the dearest ransom was the easiest thing to offer,
The easiest sacrifice was the most precious ransom
and shedding blood was the slightest calamity,
And the simplest demand was that his blood be shed
حَتَّىuntil أُعِيدَwas restored إِلَيْهَاto her تَاجُthe crown عِزَّتِهَاher honor
وَانْجَابَand fell away عَنْfrom جِيدِهَاher neck النيرُthe yoke الَّذِيthat يَقِمُoppresses
until her crown of honor was restored to her,
Until her crown of glory is returned to her
and the yoke that oppressed her fell away from her neck.
And the dam is lifted from her neck that straightens
