Must you die amid this bloom and youth?

Whoever weeps from sorrow is not to blame.

I deemed your calamity so grievous that I

Indeed see the earth bending over you in mercy.

O heart that melted away, and eye that was closed!

Death carried them both away, and was sinful.

You two were on neither side, while you both

Had known neither what was lawful nor what was forbidden.

But it is God's mysterious secret,

Surpassing what is surmised and understood.

A secret that unsettles people until

Life's veils fall away and reveal what is concealed.

There, then, we shall know what radiant truth

Gave life to souls, though it had put bodies to death.

And we shall see, in the ordering of things, what returned humankind

To dust, and what gathered dust motes into stars.

Is there, among the world's forms of sorrow,

Anything you would have preferred, had you remained here?

Go—blessed be your departure—and savor it:

A delightful eternity there, and bliss.
