Hail, defenders of Belgium, O lions!
Greetings O guardians of Belgium, O lions,
These feats are without precedent.
These deeds have never been preceded by anyone,
طَاغٍa tyrant أَلَمَّdescended بِكُمْupon you وَهْناًlate at night يُرَاوِدُكُمْseeks to lure you

A tyrant came upon you late at night, seeking to lure you
A tyrant has tempted you with weakness to seduce you,
From defending your homeland; no sound judgment restrains him.
From protecting the homeland, no sanity deters him,
لِيَسْتَبِيحَto violate كَمَاas تَهْوَىdesire مَطَامِعُهُhis ambitions

To violate, as his ambitions desire,
So that he may violate as his greed desires,
The sanctities of the covenant, undeterred by reproach.
The sanctities of the covenant, no reason makes him swerve,
قَدْindeed غَرَّهُdeceived him الْعَدَدُthe numbers الْجَرَّارُoverwhelming مُجْتَمِعاًassembled

He was deceived by the overwhelming numbers assembled
He is deluded by the massive number of soldiers gathered,
In his army, the abundant weapons and equipment.
From his army and the abundant weapons and equipment,
وَمَاand not دَرَىknew أَنَّهthat he لَوْif نَالَstruck مِدْفَعُهُhis cannon

He did not know that, even if his cannon struck
And he does not know that if his cannon attained,
The firmest fortresses, crushing them as they blazed,
To demolish the fortresses they would crumble while burning,
وَأَنَّهand that he لَوْif مَشَىmarched فِيin جَحْفَلٍa vast host لَجِبٍclamorous

And even if he marched within a clamorous host,
And that if he marched in a courageous intrepid troop,
Spreading like fire or surging onward like waves,
Like fire spreading or like a wave advancing,
لَمْnot تُولِهِwould grant him الْمُفْنِيَاتُthe instruments of destruction السُّودُblack أَجْمَعُهَاall of them

All the black instruments of destruction could not grant him
The black destructive wars would not make him possess,
The necks of a few brave men endowed with endurance.
The necks of a few bold men among whom there is fortitude,
عَدَاassailed عَلَىagainst الْحَقِّthe right وِلِهِلْمٌWilhelm يُجَرِّئُهُembolden him

Wilhelm assailed the right, emboldened by
He transgressed against the right with recklessness emboldening him,
Two ailments within him: ambition and envy.
Two diseases in him: the arrogance of the soul and envy,
أَيَغْلِبُcan he defeat الْحَقَّthe right لَوْeven if أَمْسَتْbecame فَيَالِقُهُhis legions
عَنْfor حَيِّزَيْهَاtheir two bounds يَضِيْقُgrows too narrow الأَيْنُspace وَالأَمَدُand time
Can he defeat the right, even if his legions grew
Can the right prevail if it competes with him,
So vast that space and time could not contain their bounds?
From its positions the time and space are too narrow?
إَنَّindeed الشَّجاعَةَcourage وَالنَّصرَand victory الْخَلِيقَworthy بِهَاof it

Indeed, courage and the victory worthy of it
Verily, courage and deserved victory,
Are wrought by valor, not by numbers.
Are not due to numbers but to valor,
فَكَيْفَhow then وَالْخَلْقُwhile mankind إِجْمَاعاًunanimously قَدِindeed ائْتَمَرُواhave resolved together
عَلَىto مُقَاتَلَةِfighting الطَّاغُوتِthe tyrant وَاتَّحدُواand united
How, then, could he, when all mankind has unanimously resolved
So how is it when all people unanimously agreed,
To battle the tyrant, and united?
To fight the tyrant and united?

And with illustrious detachments they supported their neighbor;
And they supported with armaments their neighbor,
That reinforcement proved the finest protector.
So that was the best refuge, such aid,
قَلُّواthey were few سَوَاداًin number وَجَازَand surpassed الْحَصْرَcounting مَاwhat فَعَلُواthey did

They were few in number, but their deeds surpassed all counting,
They diminished in number and crossed the siege with what they did,
So that even one far away recalls them and trembles.
Until even the distant one mentions it and shivers,

France grew mighty through them, beside her own young men;
Through them France was honored among its youths,
God bless her young men and all the glory they have won!
To God belong its youths and the glory they glorified,

They fight without gentleness or weariness,

The Russians approach him from another flank,
And the Russians from a second side provoke with it,
As no friend approaches: their nearness is bitter hostility.
An unpleasant alliance, their proximity is a curse,

What an army, when conviction drives it onward!
Not to mention the army when zeal drives it,

Until when it awakened the Germans in the morning,
And their realm, after the forces unite, lies scattered.
And their kingdom scattered after the unity of forces,

Woe O you who threw your nation recklessly,
Into annihilation—evil is the pool you approach!
To perdition, evil is the basin you head towards,

For the corruption you and they have wrought upon the world.
For the corruption you caused in the world and their corruption,

Destroy precious treasures; neither spare nor hold back.

Repel mercy and exert the utmost of your nature’s hardness,
And if any forms of harm escape you, strive for them.

Just retribution for a criminal through whose ambitions
Retribution for the rights of a soul from its greed,
Misery and hardship overwhelmed all humanity.

He marched to conquer the world, filled with wrath,
He walked to conquer the world, a fool,
Heedless of the one angered, who also harbored wrath.
With no heed to one detested by whom he is detested,

Crowning him is from the breaking of crowns a crown of purpose,
Massive in its fashioning, beyond any hand's skill.
Huge in making from what hands do not excel,

Amid the bloodied rubble, his crown lay in shreds.
Among the rubble his crown is smashed.

You cherished your kinship with the sons of Egypt,
You cared for the kinship of Egypt’s people,
Just as you showed compassion for the wounded, however far away.
As you sympathized with the wounded even if distant,

However are dignity, honor and country preserved?

Thus is graciousness in its most splendid forms,
Such are courage, boldness, and majestic pride.
Thus is courage, valor and hunting,
