When will this overhanging cloud clear,

And its scowling shadow lift from us,

So the sun of truth may shine, filling its sky,

And stars rise in the night of falsehoods?

If we have not tired of the delusions of our ignorance,

Then surely the calamities of sword and fire are wearisome.

Sons of the East, ignorance is our fiercest enemy.

Hasten against it: you will prevail or find safety.

It is the ruthless tyrant that assails us and destroys us.

It is the sinner roaming among us, dividing us.

Is it not an injustice that we should be its soldiers,

So it remains the ruler, the domineering master?

O sorrowful land of Anatolia, I

Greet you from afar with my heart.

Your wounds are in our vitals, and our wounds—

Through them glory bleeds, and greatness suffers.

And though your calamity be great, what has befallen

Our community, among communities, is greater.

We wept for your young men, slaughtered in safety,

And they were fortresses for the land, torn down.

We wept for maidens whose honor was stained by blood,

And they died as martyrs; blood then purified them.

    We wept for children—radiant angels—

They were annihilated; now they are scattered flesh and bones.

    فَإِنْ تَجْمُدُوا عُدْنَا عَلَى البَدْءِ فَاعْلَمُوا

    Calamities wrought by ignorance—so fight ignorance;

For if you stand idle, we shall return to the beginning—know this.
