each summoned its crown for you, seeking sole possession.

And the whiteness of gray hair made your renown
So your prison was none but repose
more radiant in splendor, now purified.
And toil had wearied of keeping vigil
فَمَاso not كَانwas سِجْنُكَyour prison إِلاَّexcept قَرَاراًa resting place
وَقَدْand already تعِبَgrew weary الجِدُّstriving أَنْto يَسْهَرَاkeep vigil
Your prison was nothing but a resting place,
Nor was exile, but a retreat you made
when striving had grown weary of keeping vigil.
For the time of cultivation, fecund
وَلاَand not النَّفيُexile إِلاَّexcept خَلاَءًsolitude أَعَدْتَyou restored
بِهin it زَمَنَthe age الأَدَبِliterature الأَزْهَراradiant
And exile was only a solitude; you restored
Nor bereavement, but to anguish
in it the radiant age of letters.
And weep the weeping of courageous lions
وَلاَand not الثُّكلُbereavement إِلاَّexcept لِتَأْسَىso you might grieve أَسَاgrief (beginning)
كَyour وَتَبْكِيand weep بُكَاءَthe weeping لُيُوثِlions الشَّرىShara
And bereavement was only to let you mourn your sorrow,
Nor aversion for what eyes behold
and weep as the lions of Shara weep.
Except it was ugly for it to be seen
وَلاَand not الغَضُّlowering the gaze عَمَّاfrom what تَرَاهُsee it العُيُوeyes (beginning)
نُeyes (ending) إِلاَّexcept وَقَدْand already سَاءَbecame bad أَنْto يُنْظَرَاbe looked at
And lowering the gaze from what eyes see
When the universe encompasses one's thoughts
was only because it had grown foul to behold.
Then no harm for sights to roam
إِذَاwhen وَسِعencompassed الكَوْنَthe universe فِكْرُthought امْرِيءٍa person
فَلاَthen no بأْسَharm بِالطَّرْفِfor the eye أَنْto يُحْسرَاbe exhausted
When a person's thought encompasses the universe,
Upon the sun to guide the seeing
there is no harm if the gaze grows weary.
And not upon the sun to give sight
عَلَىincumbent upon الشمْسِthe sun أَنْto تهْديَguide المُبصِرِينَthose who see
وَلَيْسَand it is not عَلَىincumbent upon الشَّمسِthe sun أَنْto تُبْصِرَاsee
The sun must guide those who see,
So O praised body, be at peace
but the sun is not required to see.
And O lofty eye, enjoy the vine
فَيَاso, O جِسْمَbody مَحْمُودَMahmoud بِتْspend the night فيin سُكُونٍstillness
وَيَاand O عَيْنَeye سَامٍSami اهْنَيءِrest content بِالْكرَىin slumber
So, body of Mahmoud, spend the night in stillness,
And O its thoughts, how you yearned for heights!
and eye of Sami, rest content in slumber.
You reached their expanse, so what do you see?
وَيَاand O فِكْرَهُhis thought كمْhow often نَشَدْتَyou sought العُلَىthe heights
بَلَغْتَyou reached مَدَاهَاtheir utmost extent فَمَاذَاso what تَرَىdo you see
And you, his thought, how often you sought the heights!
Gaze upon these beings
You have reached their utmost limit; what do you see?
From where you are, at the highest abode
أَطِلَّlook down عَلَىupon هَذِهِthese الكَائِنَاbeings (beginning)

Look down upon these beings
Do you see other than a vast space
from where you are, at the loftiest peaks.
In which stars wander, abundant?
أَتَنْظرُdo you see? غيْرَanything but فضَاءٍan expanse رَحِيبٍvast
تُحَاكِيresemble النُّجومُthe stars بِهin it العِثْيَرَاdust
Do you see anything but a vast expanse,
And hear other than a semblance of rustling
where the stars resemble dust?
Of what collided therein and was rolled?
وتَسْمَعُand do you hear? غيْرَanything but شَبِيهِthe likeness الحَفيفِrustling لِمَاof what
اصْطُكَّcollided مِنْهَاamong them وَمَاand what كُوِّرَاwas rolled into spheres
And hear anything but a sound like rustling from what
Then say silently, and gesture bidding farewell
has collided among them, and what was rolled into spheres?
To one who was lost on earth and was arrogant
فَقُلْso speak صَامِتاًsilent وَأَشِرْand gesture مَائِتاًdead
لِمَنْto whoever تَاهَstrutted فِيon الأَرْضِearth وَاسْتَكْبَرَاand grew arrogant
Then speak in silence, and gesture in death,
For what are the towering of these mountains?
to whoever strutted on earth and grew arrogant:
And why the towering of this abode?
عَلاَمَwhy? تَبَاذُخُmutual boasting هَذيthese الجِبَالِmountains
وَفِيمَand why? تَشَامُخُholding oneself high هَذَاthis الوَرَىhumankind
Why do these mountains vie in grandeur,
and why does humankind hold itself so high?
