Ask a bird in a garden,
Ask a bird in a garden
lush and fragrant with perfume,
A singing nightingale with fragrant scent
يَلْهُوhe plays وَيَمْرَحُand he frolics هَائِئاًcontentedly (likely intended: هانئاً)

playing and frolicking contentedly
Playing and frolicking, fluttering
among the groves in joy,
Amongst the vine leaves in the courtyard

choosing sweet fruit
Choosing the garden’s sweetest fruits
or pecking at the pool's clear water;
Or pecking the clearest water

Sometimes cooing softly
in the thickets to the birds' songstress;
Amongst the branches where birds dwell

And at times swiftly soaring
through the air, varying his course.
Through the air taking different paths

When it lands, the air calms
rocks him as a cradle rocks.

And when it flaps under its wings

Stirs the wave of ether

what has shielded him from whoever hunts
Neither its fortress saves it from the hunter
and made him safe from whatever harms?
Nor its refuge from what harms
