حَبسْتَyou confined عَلَىto الْوَظِيفَةِthe post مِنْكَfrom you نُوراًa light
تَفَقَّدَهُlooked for it الْحِمَىthe homeland وَاللَّيْلُand the night غاشِshrouding
You confined a light of yours to your post,
You imprisoned within this job a light
The homeland sought it, shrouded in night.
That fever and night keep vigil for
وَقَيَّدْتَand you fettered الْقَرِيضَverse عَلَىdespite افْتِقَارٍa need
مِنَof الْوَطَنِthe homeland الْعَثُورِfaltering إِلىfor انْتِعَاشِrevival
And you fettered verse despite the need
And you chained inspiration to destitution
Of the faltering homeland for revival.
From a stumbling homeland to revival
فمَاso not صَدَقُواthey spoke truthfully وَغَيْرُكَand someone other than you مَنْthe one whom عَنَوهُthey meant him
بِقَوْلِهِمْby their saying أُحِيلَhe was transferred إِلىto المَعاِشِthe pension
So they spoke falsely; it was someone other than you they meant
So they were not truthful, and others besides you
When they said, “He was retired.”
Who said he was pensioned off
