    وَهلْ دَعَا وَاجِبٌ قَبْلاً وَلَمْ أَجِبِ

    You called me, afflicted as I am with illness;

And has duty ever called before without my answering?

So if I fall short, I hope for pardon today,

For affection spurs me on, but exhaustion holds me back.

O fellowship of goodness, you remain as you have always been,

Paying benefactors their due from close at hand.

Today a noble man is honored, who bolstered your strength

In the aims you pursued for the people's good.

The weak are trusts committed to our care

By fate; whoever shows them mercy is rewarded.

Najib, you have attained a summit none can reach

Save the masters among the noble elite.

Were you not, among medicine's trusted authorities, a source of pride

For Egypt among non-Arab and Arab authorities?

It is no wonder that nations raise the standing of a man

Whose deeds are bound by ties to generosity.

Genius glories in the hopes you have fulfilled

Before their time, and in the honor you have built,

And in the lofty station you have attained,

Which has heightened the radiance of resplendent honor and lineage.

These virtues, however you hide them in quiet reserve,

Show through the veil of graciousness and refinement.

They have been perfected through newly acquired qualities of your own,

Added to traits inherited from an exalted grandfather and father.

So rejoice in the favor of the great Farouk—and how

Worthy you are of high office and the title!

And rejoice in honor from the head of his government,

    And from his companions, present and absent;

And from senators and deputies, whose array

Around the king is the order of the sun and shooting stars.

And rejoice in the gracious greetings of those who came

To you from among the nation's chosen leaders.

Egypt was embodied in them, inspiring

Poetry and speeches that delight the gathering.

A fine reward for those who have rendered their country

Her due with wisdom, sincerity, and perseverance!

May your ascent continue in good fortune prepared

For you by the lucky stars, and in safety from calamities.
