في دار شاهينٍ تجلَّت غادَةٌ
اضحىbecame بهاthrough her ثغرُmouth الهناjoy متبسّماsmiling
اضحى بها ثغرُ الهنا متبسّما
In Shahin’s house a graceful maiden appeared;
In the abode of a falcon appeared a graceful maid
through her, the mouth of joy broke into a smile.
Her smiling mouth made the days joyful
لَمّاwhen بدتshe appeared لمؤَرخيهاto her chroniclers واِنجلتand became visible
لَمّا بدت لمؤَرخيها واِنجلت
قالواthey said أَماis … not? تُدعىshe is named فَقُلتُso I said لهمto them أَماAma (a name)
قالوا أَما تُدعى فَقُلتُ لهم أَما
When she appeared before her chroniclers and stood revealed,
When she appeared to those who recorded her beauty and charmed them
they said, “Is she not named?” I told them, “Ama.”
They asked "What is your name?" I said to them "Ama"
