This spring has come to us with the light of beauty,

And clothed the earth in many-colored flowers,

Of dazzling white amid cheerful green,

Alongside lush red from the earth's anemones.

So the rose, in its color, is the beloved's cheek: when

You pluck its kiss, it blushes red with shyness.

And the chrysanthemum is like a mouth graced with gleaming teeth,

Parting in a smile, joyful in companionship.

And the tender narcissus is like an eye that gazed

At one who loves it, hoping for kindness from him.

And jasmine appeared within its calyxes,

As though it were a graceful youth you meet, intoxicated.

O mistress of beauty, this day is smiling,

And to us you are the loveliest thing that ever was.

Do you find delight in this garden, O my hope?

Then her smiling mouth parted, revealing pearls and coral.

In a lushly shaded garden among gardens of flowers,

Which branches had crowned above the blossoms.

Here is a slender singer with a resonant voice,

The lute in his hand, asking you for leave.

She said, “Then sing something for us”; he said to her,

“O glance that kindled fires within the heart!”

She laughed, then said, “This is lovely,

But I want something else”; so he sang to us:

“Indeed, the eyes with dark-and-white beauty in their gaze

Have slain us, then never revived our slain.

They strike down the man of reason until he cannot stir,

Yet they are the frailest of God's human creatures.”

Then the melody of the strings turned to sorrow,

Stirring sorrow in the ears with notes and melodies,

Until she began to sway from the lingering notes,

Intoxicated, carrying roses and sweet basil.

And I stopped him briefly when she turned,

Revealing to us hues of enchanting beauty.

I handed her the lute, and kisses followed it,

Until she came to, calling, “What has happened?”

And the music stirred her sorrows, so she began

Embracing the lute, repeatedly and at intervals.

Then she came to and sang, smiling,

While the lute kindled fires in the palm trees of her hand.

“Be as you wish, for I have no substitute for you.

You are clear water for a heart that spent the night thirsty.”

And she hastened, swift in her jujube-berry steps,

While the lute begged her for gentleness and kindness,

Until the trees swayed in rapture,

Their branches now like the figures of graceful maidens.

The breeze softened over the robe of late afternoon, and

Day had departed, and our intimate talk grew sweet in that hour.

And night approached, its stars urging it onward,

As though they were horsemen amid the dust.

And it renewed delight as she sang in rapture:

“O night, you have grown long for one who lies awake!”

O maiden whose appearance banishes sorrows,

Until you see the sorrowful, yearning lover joyful,

    هيهات بعدك يلقى القلب سلوانا

    You gladdened my heart, though it never attained its wish;

Without you, the heart will never find solace.

One whose aspirations are lofty seeks companionship,

Like me: time opposed him, yet he was never humbled.

Then the melody of the strings turned to sorrow,

Stirring sorrow in the ears with notes and melodies,
