بليت بحبِّ بين جنبيَّ مشتعل
ولاand no ذنبblame ليfor me فيماin what بليتI was afflicted ولاand no حولpower
ولا ذنب لي فيما بليت ولا حول
I am afflicted with a love blazing between my sides.
I suffered from a burning love in my heart
And I bear no blame for my affliction, nor have I any power.
Though I'm not to blame for what I suffered, nor have power over it

فذكرني عذراً وما كان قد حصل
And the apparition renewed in me a yearning that stirred me.
And the specter renewed in me a yearning that stirred me
So it reminded me of an excuse, and of what had happened.
Reminding me gently, though nothing had yet occurred

I could never forget the morning I met her,
Alas! How could I forget that morning I met her
Swaying like a ban-tree bough, or an intoxicated drinker.
Swaying like a bough of acacia or one drunk on wine

وحيّت ولكن بالدلال وبالخجل
Love, modesty, and bashfulness were equal in her.
To her, love, coyness and modesty were all equal
And she greeted me, but with coy charm and shyness.
She greeted me, but with charm and shyness

And love's stillness reigned between me and her.
Tranquil love reigned between us
In both of us, the malady of love had settled.
Both stricken with love’s malady

Then her two eyes addressed them both.
I addressed both her eyes
And the speech of the eye was the most eloquent message conveyed.
And the eye's discourse was the most eloquent ever conveyed

Beneath the shade of the lote tree, our day was sweet
And she reproached me nearby, unaware of what had happened.
And she teased me with her nearness, unaware of what had transpired

And Adhra was like a supple bough whenever she bent,
A maid like a moist branch when bent
And like the sun she shone in the midst of dusk.
And like the sun when it reached the horizon at dawn

بأنّك أنت الروح والقصد والأمل
I gesture to her with my fingertips, making clear
I gestured toward her with my fingertips
That you yourself are the soul, the purpose, and the hope.
Indicating “You are the spirit, the goal, the hope”

Queen of my heart—not Suad, nor Amal.
Queen of my heart, neither happiness nor hope without you

So love's tenderness shows, conveyed by her glance,
So the tenderness of love appeared in her glance
And the rose of her cheek swiftly reddens.
And the rose of her cheek reddened in haste

A delicious mouth that tempts you to kiss

Oh maiden, remember, do not cut off hope
Show me mercy, O Adhra—do not sever hope.
Your tenderness, oh maiden, do not cut off hope

O maiden, I inscribed this name
On the page of my heart with passion, and there it still remains.
On the page of my heart, with passion that still remains

I love you, O Adhra, and love is a state:
I love you, O maiden, and love is a condition
When it befalls a person, he knows not what he has done.
That, when it afflicts a man, he knows not what he did

And you, by the sanctity of love, are a marvel of beauty,
You and the right of love are a verse in beauty
Too exalted and sublime for any equal to be compared with it.
Sublime and exalted, that none other can equal
