وماand what انتفاعيmy benefit بنورfrom the light of الصبحdawn أرقبهI await it
وما انتفاعي بنور الصبح أرقبه
ونورهand its light وظلامand the darkness of الليلnight سيانُalike
ونوره وظلام الليل سيانُ
And what use to me is the light of dawn I await,
What good is the dawn light that I watch for,
When its light and the darkness of night are alike?
When its light and the night's darkness are the same?
والليلand night يوقظawakens آلاميmy pains ويظهرهاand reveals them
والليل يوقظ آلامي ويظهرها
إلىuntil الصباحmorning وشطُّand the shore of الليلnight أحزانsorrows
إلى الصباح وشطُّ الليل أحزان
And night awakens my pains and lays them bare
The night awakens my sorrows and reveals them
Until morning—and the shore of night is sorrow.
To the morning, while the night's adversity brings grief.
والداءand illness يفتكravages والحمىand fever مسلطةholding sway
والداء يفتك والحمى مسلطة
والجسمand the body ملقىcast down عليهupon it البؤسmisery عنوانa mark
والجسم ملقى عليه البؤس عنوان
And illness ravages, and fever holds sway,
Illness ravages me, fever unleashed,
And the body lies cast down, with misery as its mark.
And misery blankets my frail form.
ياO قلبheart صبراًpatience وإنand even if جلّتit is grave وإنand even if عظمتit is great
يا قلب صبراً وإن جلّت وإن عظمت
واقطعand cut off رجاءكyour hope فالآمالfor hopes بهتانfalsehood
واقطع رجاءك فالآمال بهتان
O heart, be patient, though the suffering be grave, though it be great,
Oh heart, be patient, though sorrows multiply,
And sever your hope, for hopes are lies.
Sever your hopes, for hopes are delusions.
إنif خانكbetrays you الدهرtime لاnot ترجوyou hope for مساعدةhelp
إن خانك الدهر لا ترجو مساعدة
فالناسfor people للدهرof time أتباعfollowers وأعوانand helpers
فالناس للدهر أتباع وأعوان
If time betrays you, do not hope for help,
If fate betrays you, do not seek aid,
For people are time’s followers and helpers.
For people are fate's followers and allies.
غريزةan instinct فيin جميعall الخلقhumankind قدindeed جُبِلتwas ingrained
غريزة في جميع الخلق قد جُبِلت
لاnot يستساغis acceptable لهاof it فيin القلبthe heart نكرانdenial
لا يستساغ لها في القلب نكران
An instinct has been ingrained in all humankind,
In all creation, an instinct was implanted -
Whose denial finds no acceptance in the heart.
Its disavowal in the heart cannot be denied.
لاnot الأهلkin أهلkin إذاwhen يمّمتyou made for ساحتهمtheir courtyard
لا الأهل أهل إذا يمّمت ساحتهم
وقتat the time of البلاءaffliction ولاnor الاخوانbrothers اخوانbrothers
وقت البلاء ولا الاخوان اخوان
Kin are not kin when you make for their courtyard
Not true kin are kin when you visit their dwellings
In times of affliction, nor are brothers brothers.
In times of affliction, nor true brothers, brothers.
